In the past 50 years, great progress has been made in developing artificial fiber-reinforced composite materials, generally using filaments with microscopic diameters. An array of reinforcement forms can be used in commercial applications - with the microstructure being a critical factor in realizing the required properties in a material. Microstructural Characterisation of Fibre-Reinforced Composites comprehensively examines the application of advanced microstructural characterization techniques to fiber-reinforced composites.

Over the last 50 years, great progress has been made in developing artificial fibre-reinforced composite materials, generally using filaments with microscopic diameters. A wide range of reinforcement forms, from random arrays to fully aligned, can be used for commercial applications, with the microstructure being a critical factor in realising the required properties in a material. This is the first up-to-date review of how to apply advanced microstructural characterisation techniques to fibre-reinforced composites. Each chapter is designed to offer both a stand-alone introduction to its topic and detailed referencing for follow-up research. With contributions from experts from around the world, the book will be an essential reference for materials scientists and research workers in industry and academia alike. Comprehensive and up-to-date review of the microstructural features of composites Covers a wide range of microstructure characterisation techniques

Individual axial tensile specimens of AS4/3501-6 and T300/934 unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced polymer composite laminate systems are characterized microstructurally. Fiber volume, fractional fiber volume, fiber uniformity, void volume, and variations in laminate thickness are acquired using automated quantitative image analysis (QIA). The sample preparation methods and QIA system procedures are fully explained. The problems in determining average or batch fiber contents in composite laminates using current methods are discussed. Possible problems in using micrometer thickness data in fiber content calculations are discussed when variations in specimen thickness due to surface contours are present. Variations in microstructure exhibited within a single fabricating company, between several fabricating companies, and between two different fiber-resin systems are demonstrated. Overall, QIA was determined to be a precise means of determining fiber and void contents and uniformity in individual test specimens prior to or after mechanical testing. (aw).

A limiting design characteristic of carbon-coated, aligned-fiber reinforced, metal matrix composites is the mechanical strength of the fiber/matrix interface region under transverse loading conditions. There is at present no clear correlation between the mechanical properties and the structure of the fiber/matrix interfaces for these composite systems. In this program, a procedure for the structural analysis of the critical carbon layer has been developed based on processing of TEM diffraction patterns or high resolution TEM images. It is demonstrated that the structural differences between various regions of the same carbon layer can be distinguished and quantified. Similar analyses should aide in the comparison of different carbon-coated, fiber reinforced composites.

The addition of sand increased the strength of the plain cement paste, but decreased the mechanical performance of the fiber reinforced cement composites. Fiber clumping, an increase in the size and number of fiber free areas and higher matrix porosity were observed in the composites when sand was used.

This book highlights the pulchritudinous features of FRP composites emphasizing failure criteria referring to microstructural as well as micromechanical aspects. The potential and promises of this class of material as being explored for supercritical applications necessitate the analysis and assessment of FRPs with a spectrum of low to high strain rates. Additionally, constitutive modeling and shock properties of polymeric composites along with the data processing techniques and relevant theories for different characterization methods are conversed. The findings of previous studies available on mechanical characteristics of polymer composites under quasi-static and high-strain-rate circumstances are also discussed. The dearth of open literature and limited information culminate the need for this book which may eventually bridge the existing gap.
