Midland is located on the southern end of Georgian Bay's 30,000 Islands about ninety miles north of Toronto. In 1871 a group of the principal shareholders of the Midland Railway, headed by Adolph Hugel, chose this location as the northern terminus of their line which they ran from Port Hope to Beaverton. The town site was surveyed in 1872-73. The railway line was completed in 1879 and soon attracted settlers to the area. The new community, Midland, achieved its early growth through shipping and the lumber and grain trade. John Dollar established the Ontario Lumber Company in 1875. The success of Dollar's operations led to the construction of a series of "mill houses" just outside the eastern limits of the community known as "Dollar Town." This section was annexed by the town in 1904. Dollar also erected the first board sidewalk in Midland, running from his Hugel Avenue home eastward to Knox Presbyterian Church. The Dollar family left Midland in 1890. The Dollar House, 657 Hugel Avenue (see Page 30), was later occupied by William Finlayson, lawyer, municipal leader, provincial legislator and cabinet minister. Finlayson entered into a local law practice with W.H. Bennett (later Senator Bennett) in 1897 and later with George S. Dudley. He served as mayor of Midland from 1906-07. Elected to the Ontario legislature as MPP for East Simcoe, Finlayson served from 1923 to 1934 and 1937 to 1939. From 1926 to 1934 he was Minister of Lands and Forests. His interest in the town's municipal affairs was highlighted by his involvement in obtaining the funds necessary for the construction of the Midland Arena Gardens in 1931. Martyrs' Shrine honors the eight Jesuit priests and their companions who, 350 years ago, lived, worked and died while serving various Native peoples of Canada.

Port Hope is a heritage community situated on the north shore of Lake Ontario in Northumberland County and offers both an urban and rural paradise with the perfect combination of heritage charm, modern vibrancy and cultural allure. The Ganaraska River runs through the heart of town past historic buildings. The Township was opened in 1792 and named in honor of Colonel Henry Hope, a member of the Legislative Council of Canada. Before Canada became a nation in 1867, Port Hope was already a boomtown. Its main streets were thronged with horse-drawn carriages and farmers' wagons, its plank sidewalks crowded with shoppers and merchandise. Wood-burning locomotives pulled heavily loaded trains through town on their way to a harbor filled with schooners and steamships. Solid brick commercial blocks and houses lined the streets. The town grew rapidly from four families of English descent who arrived by boat in 1793 and settled at the river mouth. Until then the area had been home to aboriginal groups--Huron, then Iroquois, and finally Mississauga--attracted by the salmon and sturgeon that swarmed in its river. The first European settlers came from the new United States. They had chosen to follow the British crown after the American Revolution. More families arrived including blacksmiths, carpenters, bricklayers, and merchants. The mills drew farmers from fifty and sixty kilometers away. Grain that could not be milled was bought by distilleries--there were eventually five along the river--that produced a famous Port Hope whisky. In 1856 the Grand Trunk Railway connected Port Hope to Toronto and the Atlantic seaboard. Its viaduct over the Ganaraska River was the second greatest engineering challenge on the route, exceeded only by bridging the St. Lawrence River at Montreal.Another railway heading north from Port Hope opened up the vast timberlands and new farms of central Ontario andstretched to Peterborough and Lindsay. Eventually it reached Georgian Bay, at Midland. Down this line came great loads of timber and grain. Some went east to England, but most was exported to the USA through Rochester across the lake.

Culinary Landmarks is a definitive history and bibliography of Canadian cookbooks from the beginning, when La cuisinière bourgeoise was published in Quebec City in 1825, to the mid-twentieth century. Over the course of more than ten years Elizabeth Driver researched every cookbook published within the borders of present-day Canada, whether a locally authored text or a Canadian edition of a foreign work. Every type of recipe collection is included, from trade publishers' bestsellers and advertising cookbooks, to home economics textbooks and fund-raisers from church women's groups. The entries for over 2,200 individual titles are arranged chronologically by their province or territory of publication, revealing cooking and dining customs in each part of the country over 125 years. Full bibliographical descriptions of first and subsequent editions are augmented by author biographies and corporate histories of the food producers and kitchen-equipment manufacturers, who often published the books. Driver's excellent general introduction sets out the evolution of the cookbook genre in Canada, while brief introductions for each province identify regional differences in developments and trends. Four indexes and a 'Chronology of Canadian Cookbook History' provide other points of access to the wealth of material in this impressive reference book.
