[Description in English] Latin America and the Caribbean: Development, migration and remittances Migrants are now more essentially and directly involved in various economic and social activities with their countries of origin. This is partly due to the dynamic of globalization and the new opportunities resulting from the political and economic opening of their home societies. Remittances have an effect on finances, and therefore on the economy and development, and in a competitive context they also seek to increase the availability of income through saving and spending. By increasing saving, remittances influence the ability to generate assets, and thus create possibilities for saving per se as well as investment in activities such as housing. In this sense, remittances serve as a factor that helps to increase the liquid and fixed assets of those who receive them. This publication is part of a decade-long study involving field research and project implementation that gathers and analyzes information on the way money transfers affect economies, communities and families in receiver countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. The book offers an analysis of trends in the relationship between remittances and development in the case of Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as an empirical, theoretical and policy-based approach to the topic. Family remittances involve the sending of money by immigrants to their families in their country of origin as a source of income. This money is part of a global context associated with migratory processes and operates within a reality in which these transfers, and their impact on those who receive them and their countries, have become worthy of analysis.

Covid 19 And Migration Understanding The Pandemic And Human Mobility written by Ibrahim Sirkeci and has been published by Transnational Press London this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on with Social Science categories.

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted every domain of life. Migration and human mobility in general are not exceptions. Since March 2020, researchers, policy makers and many others have channelled their efforts to understand this new coronavirus, its impact and prospects. Many scholars were thinking and writing on the pandemic from its onset and many blog essays quickly appeared. One of the earliest peer-reviewed research articles Sirkeci and Yucesahin (2020) is reproduced here. This article and its focus on mobility and travel data showed that it was possible to predict the spatial spread and concentration of COVID-19 cases. Not only was this finding crucial to developing appropriate policies and strategies to counter the spread of the virus, it reminded us that the pandemic is a social disease and not simply a biological threat. The contributions in this book should be considered in this regard tackling the social and policy aspects as we leave the biological and medical side to the experts. | “Covid-19 introduces new uncertainties for everyone. For agriculture, the longer term effects of the pandemic include faster mechanization, more guest workers, and rising imports. Responses are likely to vary by commodity and be shaped by government policies.” – Philip L Martin, Professor Emeritus, University of California, Davis, USA “The COVID-19 pandemic reminds us of just how many people across the world rely on mobility for their livelihood: taxi drivers, delivery workers, street vendors, maintenance technicians of long-distance operation systems, all employees in the hospitality sector… not forgetting the most vulnerable at this time, the homeless, beggars and street kids, especially in the global South, who have to move from place to place to get food, to find a place to sleep through the night, and to run away from police.” – Biao Xiang, Professor of Anthropology, University of Oxford, UK Contents: CHAPTER 1. Social capital - networks of civic engagements, norms of reciprocity, and attitudes of trust - is widely seen as playing a key role for the health of democracy. While many authors have examined the consequences of social capital, there is a pressing need to explore its sources. This collection brings together leading American and European scholars in the first comparative analysis of how social trust and other civic attitudes are generated. The contributors to this volume examine the generation of social capital from two directions: society-based approaches that emphasize voluntary associations, and institutional approaches that emphasize policy.
