Population Politics in the Tropics explores colonial population policies in Angola between 1890 and 1945 from a transimperial perspective. Using a wide array of previously unused sources and multilingual archival research from Angola, Portugal and beyond, Samuël Coghe sheds new light on the history of colonial Angola, showing how population policies were conceived, implemented and contested. He analyses why and how doctors, administrators, missionaries and other colonial actors tried to grasp and quantify demographic change and 'improve' the health conditions, reproductive regimes and migration patterns of Angola's 'native' population. Coghe argues that these interventions were inextricably linked to pervasive fears of depopulation and underpopulation, but that their implementation was often hampered by weak state structures, internal conflicts and multiple forms of African agency. Coghe's fresh analysis of demography, health and migration in colonial Angola challenges common ideas of Portuguese colonial exceptionalism.

Imagined Racial Laboratories reveals the watermarks of science in the dynamics of racialisation in Southeast Asia, during and after the colonial period. Bringing together a set of critical histories of race sciences, it illuminates the racialised dimensions of colony and nation in the region. It demonstrates that racialisation took — and continues to take — mutable and multiple forms that often connect, perhaps more than differentiate, colonial and national periods across a variety of Southeast Asian settings. Thus, imagined races have contributed as much to the invention of modern Southeast Asia as have other fabled imagined communities.

This edited volume is dedicated to national-socialist archaeology as a Europe-wide phenomenon. It analyses national-socialist attempts to denationalize the archaeologies of European nations by creating a new unifying European archaeology on a racial basis. From the beginning of the nineteenth century, archaeology began to develop into an important force behind processes of nation building. At the same time, structures of transnational academic collaboration contributed strongly to the internal dynamics of the research field, which was primarily organized on a national basis. In those European countries that were confronted with national-socialist occupation and repression between 1939 and 1945, these transnational archaeological networks were to prove crucial for the development of national-socialist archaeological policies. This volume will reveal how national-socialist archaeology was to an extent valued positively in its time as highly innovative, even influencing the archaeology of non-occupied countries. Although in the final instance, it generally failed to displace the national archaeologies in Europe, the volume also analyses the long-term impact of national-socialist rule on the development of European archaeology. How did the attempts to create a unified European archaeology after 1945 continue to influence networks, methods and terminologies, institutional structures, or popular representations of the early past?

Na origem dos novos caminhos, para o desenvolvimento da investigação na área da Química, na Universidade de Coimbra, está o Centro de Estudos de Química Nuclear e Radioquímica, planeado pelo director do Laboratório Chimico, Rui Gustavo Couceiro da Costa, para estudos nucleares. Edificado, em 1955, no espaço ajardinado, entre o então Hospital da Universidade de Coimbra e a entrada lateral do Laboratorio Chimico. Aqui irão despontar, início dos anos 60, os grupos de investigação, promovidos e incentivados por Fernando Pinto Coelho, responsável pelo Centro de Química Nuclear e Radioquímica e pela cadeira de Química-Física, nomeadamente, Radioquímica, Espectroscopia de Ressonância Paramagnética Electrónica, Espectroscopia de Ressonância Magnética Nuclear, Termodifusão, Espectroscopia de Raman e Química Quântica e Fotoquímica e Química da Atmosfera. Se, durante uma ou duas décadas, com a estratégia desenvolvida, se possibilitou a criação de um Departamento forte em Química, embora, com pouca sobreposição nas áreas científicas dos diferentes grupos e, consequentemente, pouca competição científica interna, a evolução das estruturas sociológicas da ciência passou a exigir uma maior concentração em temas comuns e, inevitavelmente, o desenvolvimento de complementaridades e pontos de intersecção entre os diferentes grupos de investigação que projetaram, em termos de I&D, a Química, na Universidade de Coimbra, para níveis de qualidade e dimensão que veio a desfrutar no panorama nacional e internacional.

Há 150 anos, mais precisamente em 24 de Novembro de 1859, Darwin deu a conhecer um novo paradigma da história natural através da publicação A Origem das Espécies. Como a epistemologia já constatou, a teoria darwiniana da descendência com modificações ou teoria da seleção natural levou cerca de 20 anos a ser construída, ou seja, entre 1837 e 1859, grosso modo. Os 150 anos de história do darwinismo e da evolução apresentam a fecundidade da teoria da seleção natural, tanto no plano das ciências da vida e do homem como no plano das culturas. Tal como em quase todo o mundo, também em Portugal a receção de Darwin iniciou-se nos anos 60 do século XIX, apresentando novidades surpreendentes, atendendo à escala portuguesa. Em 2009 o Grupo de História e Sociologia da Ciência do Centro de Estudos Interdisciplinares do Século XX da Universidade de Coimbra organizou o Encontro Internacional “Darwin, Darwinismos, Evolução (1859-2009)”. Esta reunião científica pretendeu ser um espaço de discussão aberto a todos os interessados neste tema, tanto no plano nacional como internacional. Os textos agora publicados constituem uma coletânea de muitos textos ampliados e que serviram de base às comunicações apresentadas. 150 years ago, on 24th November 1859, Darwin launched a new paradigm of natural history with the publication of his work On the Origin of the Species. As epistemology has shown, Darwin’s theory of descent with modification, or the theory of natural selection, took some 20 years to develop (i.e. between 1837 and 1859, broadly speaking). The 150-year history of Darwinism and evolution show the fecundity of this theory, in both the life sciences and culture. In Portugal, as in much of the rest of the world, the reception of Darwin only really got going in the 1960s, and took an interesting form. In 2009, the History and Sociology of Science group at the Centre for 20th century Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Coimbra organized the international conference on “Darwin, Darwinisms, Evolution (1859-2009)”, to provide a forum for anyone interested in the subject, both nationally and internationally. The texts published here are extended versions of the papers presented at that conference
