Ünlü düşünür Max Weber, modern kapitalizm analizinde diğer düşünürlerden farklı yorumlar ortaya koyar. Diğer yandan Weber, kapitalizmin gelişim sürecini genel olarak ‘rasyonelleşme’ süreci olarak görür. Bu süreçte ona göre yönetim, hukuk, ekonomi, sanat, bilim ve din gibi tüm alanlar amaç-rasyonel ilkeler tarafından belirlenir. Başka bir ifadeyle rasyonelleşme; Weberyen sosyolojide modernleşme, sekülerleşme, iktisadi gelişme ve kentleşmeyle özdeştir. Weber bunları sadece Batı toplumlarına özgü tarihsel süreçler olarak görür. Weber, Batı’nın ekonomik ilerlemesi gerisindeki sebepleri analiz ederken Batı dışındaki -Doğulu- toplumların neden modern kapitalizme geçiş yapamadıklarını da inceler. İncelemesini din, hukuk, yönetim, ekonomi, maliye, ticaret, üretim, sosyal yapı ve kentler gibi alanlarda yoğunlaştırır. Bu çalışmalarla o Batı dışındaki toplumların hangi özelliklerinin modern kapitalizme geçişe izin vermediklerini ortaya çıkarmaya çalışır.
