Il volume illustra i risultati di una ricerca sui giovani, nati a cavallo tra la fine degli anni Novanta e il primo decennio del 2000, realizzata tra gli studenti delle scuole medie superiori della regione Puglia, su iniziativa del Distretto Lions di Puglia. Lo sguardo analitico dei ricercatori si è soffermato su quell’insieme di pratiche che si strutturano come solide costruzioni di senso, socialmente riconosciute e legittimate in stili di vita e codici comportamentali nella vita degli adolescenti: famiglia, valori, politica, tempo libero, comportamenti a rischio, nuovi media, lavoro e futuro. Il tutto in un contesto geografico per così dire “di confine”, in cui il vecchio e il nuovo sono presenti spesso senza confliggere, in cui la tradizione è ancora molto forte e la modernità è andata in crisi ancor prima di entrare nella mente e nella vita delle persone. Con un approccio che supera il quadro interpretativo tipico delle società tradizionali, la ricerca guarda ai giovani come persone che vivono a pieno la loro epoca, caratterizzata da un presente frammentato e un orizzonte breve. L’immagine che emerge è quella di ragazzi e ragazze che imparano a metabolizzare il rischio, trasformandolo in un mezzo per superare i propri limiti; giovani dall’identità double face insieme “smarriti” e “cacciatori di futuro”, identità camaleontiche, talvolta espressione di diverse categorie di giovani, talvolta facce della stessa medaglia. Ragazzi e ragazze di un Sud per molti versi omologato al mondo globale che lo contiene ma nel quale giocano un ruolo ancora particolarmente rilevante elementi forti della tradizione: la comunità, la famiglia, la parentela. Non appaiono indignati né sembrano volersi proporre come rivoluzionari ma esprimono inequivocabilmente il desiderio, non sempre la volontà, di cercare la loro strada tra adattamento e disincanto; non si sottraggono all’idea dell’altrove, anche se non sanno concretamente immaginarla e forse ancora non provano a costruirla.

This book addresses the practice of social innovation, which is currently very much in the public eye. New ideas and approaches are needed to tackle the severe and wicked problems with which contemporary societies are struggling. Especially in times of economic crisis, social innovation is regarded as one of the crucial elements needed to move forward. Our knowledge of its dynamics has significantly progressed, thanks to an abundance of studies on social innovation both general and sector-specific. However, despite the valuable research conducted over the past years, the systematic analysis of social innovation is still contested and incomplete. The questions asked in the book will be the following: 1. What is the nature of social innovations? 2.What patterns can be identified in social innovations emerging at the local level? 3.How is the emergence and spread of social innovations related to urban governance? More precisely, which conditions and arrangements facilitate and hinders social innovation? We explore these questions using different types of data and methods, and studying different contexts. In particular, we focus on innovations that aim at solving problems of the young unemployed, single parents and migrants. This analysis is based on original research carried out in the period 2010-2013 in the framework of a European project with a specific empirical research strategy. Research was carried out in 20 cities in 10 different European countries.

Over the last two decades, many changes have happened to the social welfare policies of various industrial countries. Citizens have seen their pensions, unemployment benefits, and general healthcare policies shrink as “belt tightening” measures are enforced. But in contrast, long-term care has seen a general growth in public financing, an expansion of beneficiaries, and, more generally, an attempt to define larger social responsibilities and related social rights. The aim of this book is to describe and interpret the changes introduced in long-term care policies in Western Europe. The volume argues that recent reforms have brought about an increasing convergence in LTC policies. Most of the new programs have developed a new general approach to long-term care, based on a better integration of social care and health care. The book explores increasing public support given to family care work (in the past, the family would take care of the elderly or infirm) and increasing growth and recognition of a extended social care market (by which care has shifted from a moral obligation based on family reciprocity to a paid, professional activity). A new social care arrangement has therefore been developing in Western countries, based on a new mix of family obligations, market provision, and public support. In order to understand such changes, this analysis will take into account the social and economical impact of these reforms.
