Tussen 1811 en 1813 hebben Franse, Nederlandse en Duitse militaire ingenieurs onder leiding van de chef d’escadron d’Epailly een groot deel van Drenthe in kaart gebracht. De 24 kaarten die zij vervaardigden vormen voor het gekarteerde gebied de oudste gedetailleerde afbeeldingen. Boerderijen, huizen en andere bebouwing in de dorpen en steden worden elk apart getoond. Details van het landschap, zoals bijvoorbeeld het grondgebruik, moerassen, stuifzandgebieden, bossen en riviertjes zijn zorgvuldig opgetekend. De kaarten brengen voor ons het landschap in het begin van de negentiende eeuw tot leven, de tijd vóór de industriële revolutie en vóór de grote bevolkingsgroei en de landschappelijke transformatie van ons land. Drenthe was toen dun bevolkt; er woonden nog slechts 41.000 mensen. Heidevelden en venen bedekten het grootste deel van de provincie. De venen waren nog grotendeels ongeschonden. Slechts in enkele plaatsen, zoals bij Hoogeveen en Smilde, was de ontginning op gang gekomen. Op de heidevelden dwaalden de herders met hun schaapskudden, met in die uitgestrektheid de dorpen, die slechts door zandwegen met elkaar waren verbonden. De reden voor de kartering door de Fransen was de wens van Napoleon – ons land was toen ingelijfd bij Frankrijk – over een goede kaart van Nederland te kunnen beschikken. Op initiatief van het bestuur van de inmiddels opgeheven Bataafse Republiek werkte luitenant-kolonel Krayenhoff al sinds 1798 aan een kaart van het gehele land, die voor dit doel kon dienen. Voor enkele gebieden, waaronder een groot deel van Drenthe en een deel van Noordwest Overijssel, kon die kaart echter niet worden voltooid omdat onvoldoende cartografische gegevens beschikbaar waren. De Franse werkzaamheden in deze gebieden, die zouden resulteren in de in deze atlas opgenomen kaarten, moesten dat manco opheffen.

The first comprehensive account of how and why architects learned to communicate through color Architectural drawings of the Italian Renaissance were largely devoid of color, but from the seventeenth century through the nineteenth, polychromy in architectural representation grew and flourished. Basile Baudez argues that colors appeared on paper when architects adapted the pictorial tools of imitation, cartographers' natural signs, military engineers' conventions, and, finally, painters' affective goals in an attempt to communicate with a broad public. Inessential Colors traces the use of color in European architectural drawings and prints, revealing how this phenomenon reflected the professional anxieties of an emerging professional practice that was simultaneously art and science. Traversing national borders, the book addresses color as a key player in the long history of rivalry and exchange between European traditions in architectural representation and practice. Featuring a wealth of previously unpublished drawings, Inessential Colors challenges the long-standing misreading of architectural drawings as illustrations rather than representations, pointing instead to their inherent qualities as independent objects whose beauty paved the way for the visual system architects use today.

In de schatkamer van het Nationaal Archief bevinden zich twee vrijwel onbekende plattegronden van de stad Nijmegen uit het jaar 1750. Daarbij ook nog een uniek schetsboek met een enorme reeks aan opmetingen en detailtekeningen. Maker van het schetsboek van die plattegronden is de Groninger militair ingenieur Klaas Willem Kiers. Hij kreeg van stadhouder Willem IV de opdracht om de stad en vesting in kaart te brengen, met als uiteindelijke doel: een maquette van het strategisch zo belangrijke Nijmegen. Die maquette is zoekgeraakt, maar het voorbereidend tekenwerk is bewaard gebleven. Dat is zeer uitzonderlijk: van heel wat vestingsteden is er wel een plattegrond, maar de schetsen die zo’n plattegrond mogelijk maakten ontbreken. Met de plattegronden en detailtekeningen loodst Kiers de kijker en lezer terug in de tijd, langs de Nijmeegse straten, poorten en vestingwerken van bijna drie eeuwen geleden. De detaillering van Kiers dwingt bewondering af. Dit boek laat zien op welk kruispunt ingenieur Kiers, opdrachtgever Willem IV en de rumoerige stad en vesting Nijmegen elkaar halverwege de achttiende eeuw ontmoetten. Uit de overdaad aan detailtekeningen is een keuze gemaakt die inzicht geeft in het werk van Kiers en de rijkdom van het overgeleverde materiaal. (Met twee uitvouwbare kaarten)
