In de schatkamer van het Nationaal Archief bevinden zich twee vrijwel onbekende plattegronden van de stad Nijmegen uit het jaar 1750. Daarbij ook nog een uniek schetsboek met een enorme reeks aan opmetingen en detailtekeningen. Maker van het schetsboek van die plattegronden is de Groninger militair ingenieur Klaas Willem Kiers. Hij kreeg van stadhouder Willem IV de opdracht om de stad en vesting in kaart te brengen, met als uiteindelijke doel: een maquette van het strategisch zo belangrijke Nijmegen. Die maquette is zoekgeraakt, maar het voorbereidend tekenwerk is bewaard gebleven. Dat is zeer uitzonderlijk: van heel wat vestingsteden is er wel een plattegrond, maar de schetsen die zo’n plattegrond mogelijk maakten ontbreken. Met de plattegronden en detailtekeningen loodst Kiers de kijker en lezer terug in de tijd, langs de Nijmeegse straten, poorten en vestingwerken van bijna drie eeuwen geleden. De detaillering van Kiers dwingt bewondering af. Dit boek laat zien op welk kruispunt ingenieur Kiers, opdrachtgever Willem IV en de rumoerige stad en vesting Nijmegen elkaar halverwege de achttiende eeuw ontmoetten. Uit de overdaad aan detailtekeningen is een keuze gemaakt die inzicht geeft in het werk van Kiers en de rijkdom van het overgeleverde materiaal. (Met twee uitvouwbare kaarten)

This Open Access book, building on research initiated by scholars from the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Centre for Global Heritage and Development (CHGD) and ICOMOS Netherlands, presents multidisciplinary research that connects water to heritage. Through twenty-one chapters it explores landscapes, cities, engineering structures and buildings from around the world. It describes how people have actively shaped the course, form and function of water for human settlement and the development of civilizations, establishing socio-economic structures, policies and cultures; a rich world of narratives, laws and practices; and an extensive network of infrastructure, buildings and urban form. The book is organized in five thematic sections that link practices of the past to the design of the present and visions of the future: part I discusses drinking water management; part II addresses water use in agriculture; part III explores water management for land reclamation and defense; part IV examines river and coastal planning; and part V focuses on port cities and waterfront regeneration. Today, the many complex systems of the past are necessarily the basis for new systems that both preserve the past and manage water today: policy makers and designers can work together to recognize and build on the traditional knowledge and skills that old structure embody. This book argues that there is a need for a common agenda and an integrated policy that addresses the preservation, transformation and adaptive reuse of historic water-related structures. Throughout, it imagines how such efforts will help us develop sustainable futures for cities, landscapes and bodies of water.

Onderwijshistorici hebben zich al veelvuldig bezig gehouden met de geschiedenis van het lager onderwijs en het onderwijs op universitair niveau. Aan het middelbaar onderwijs werd minder aandacht besteed, omdat deze vorm van onderwijs aanvankelijk uitgebreid lager onderwijs was. De Franse school nam eerst als handelsschool, later als Frans-Duytsche school en als Franse kostschool de taak op zich om leerlingen kennis te laten maken met schoolvakken als onder meer boekhouden, wiskunde, aardrijkskunde, geschiedenis, Frans en Engels. Dit soort van scholen werd opgericht door particulieren en kon hooguit een enkele maal een geldelijke ondersteuning tegemoet zien van gemeentebesturen. De toename van Franse scholen in de achttiende eeuw dwong de landelijke overheid met wettelijke maatregelen orde te scheppen in de inmiddels chaotische onderwijssituatie waarin deze onderwijsinstellingen zich bevonden. De wet op het lager onderwijs van 1857 en de wet op het middelbaar onderwijs van 1863 maakten een einde aan het bestaan van de Franse school. Meteen brengt het boek ook een goed relaas van de tijd vooraleer Nederland en België hun eigen weg gingen.
