An inspiring tale of courage and sacrifice. This book tells the story of four brothers who served in the British Army during World War I and the hardships they faced on the battlefields of France. Written by the survivor, Thomas Fernyhough, the memoirs offer a firsthand account of the brutalities of war and the bond of brotherhood that transcends even death. A touching tribute to the bravery of ordinary soldiers. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. In November 1864, Abraham Lincoln penned what is known as the “Bixby Letter” offering his condolences to the mother of five soldiers who had fallen in the service of their country. A shocking sacrifice for the cause for any one family to make, although it transpired not all of the sons were in fact dead. Some years earlier the last surviving member of his generation of the Fernyhough family, from Staffordshire in England, wrote the stories of his brothers and himself. Robert Fernyhough’s brothers, John and Henry in the Royal Marines and Thomas in the infantry, had fallen in the service of their country during the Napoleonic Wars. Robert himself saw much action as a Royal Marine before eventually fighting in the 95th Rifles in the Peninsular under Wellington, including heavy engagement at the battle of Busaco. The fighting record of the Fernyhough family that is recorded in this work is truly astonishing; Expeditions to Walcheren, Buenos Ayres, Walcheren, the coast of Spain, Savoy, Toulon, Malta, Gibraltar not to mention hard soldiering in the Peninsular make for an excellent Read. Author – Robert Fernyhough (1785-1866)

In 1806 a British expeditionary force captured Buenos Aires. Over the next eighteen months, Britain was sucked into a costly campaign on the far side of the world. The Spaniards were humbled on the battlefield and Montevideo was taken by storm, but the campaign ended in disaster when 6000 redcoats and riflemen surrendered following a bloody battle in the streets of the Argentine capital. So ended one of the most humiliating and neglected episodes of the entire Napoleonic Wars.In The British Invasion of the River Plate Ben Hughes tells the story of this forgotten campaign in graphic detail. His account is based on research carried out across two continents. It draws on contemporary newspaper reports, official documents and the memoirs, letters and journals of the men who were there. He describes the initially successful British invasion, which was stopped when their troops were surrounded in Buenos Aires main square and forced to surrender, and the second British attack which was eventually defeated too. His narrative covers the course of the entire campaign and its aftermath. While focusing on the military and political aspects of the campaign, his book gives an insight into the actions of the main protagonists William Carr Beresford, Sir Home Popham, Santiago de Liniers and Black Bob Craufurd and into the experiences of the forgotten rank and file.He also considers the long-term impact of the campaign on the fortunes of the opposing sides. Many of the British survivors went on to win glory in the Peninsular War. For the Uruguayans and Argentines, their victory gave them a sense of national pride that would eventually encourage them to wrest their independence from Spain.

These letters, collected and transcribed by Captain Robert Goldthwaite Carter in the 1870s, are among the finest primary sources on the daily life of the Union soldier in the Civil War. Robert and his three brothers all saw action with the Army of the Potomac under its various commanders, Generals McClellan, Burnside, Hooker, Meade, and Grant. At times in pairs but often in neighboring units, they fought on the battlefields of Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, and Petersburg.
