Excerpt from Military Signal Corps Manual It is common knowledge that a soldier is a fighting man whose services are due to the state; that in the regular army there are soldiers of infantry who march and fight on foot, cavalry troopers who ride horses, and artillery-men who serve the guns. It may even be known that engineer troops exist who belong to the line and perform the ordinary duties of the soldier in addition to their special service as engineers. But how few people realize, even if they know, that attached to all armies there must be, in addition to the men whose first duty is to fight, other bodies of troops whose services are absolutely needed for the proper conduct of military affairs; soldiers who are combatant troops but are charged primarily with duties tech nical in character and requiring special training and organization. Handbook Of Telephones written by Samuel Reber and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Excerpt from Handbook of Telephones: Of the Signal Corps, U. S. Army In compliance with the instructions of the Chief Signal Officer of the Army, this handbook has been prepared to describe, in as simple and nontechnical language as possible, the construction and Operation of the various types of telephones and switch boards supplied by the Signal Corps for the use of the Army; consequently no reference to the engineering principles involved is made. The telephone is daily becoming of more and more importance to the Army. Nearly all Of the apparatus described in this book has been designed by the officers of the Corps to cover the special necessities that arise in the military service, where the requirements are quite different from those of ordinary commercial life. In the field apparatus strength and portability are the pre dominating features Of design, while the efficiency of talking and ringing circuits is maintained. A part of the field apparatus is intended to utilize the principles of simultaneous telegraphy and telephony over the same circuit. Since the issuance of the instructions of 1901, the types Of telephones and switch boards have all been standardized, and only those which are issued at present are described. I am indebted to Mr. R. A. Klock, electrical engineer, Signal Corps, for the material Of the text and the figures contained in Chapter VII. Excerpt from Exploits of the Signal Corps in the War With Spain Instant communication is the insistent demand of the closing days of the nineteenth century, in both military and civil life. Cities are honeycombed, as it were, by telephone lines, penetrating even to the very separate rooms and desks in our great buildings; States and nations are enmeshed in intricate webs of telegraph and telephone lines, and the twelve parallel submarine cables across the Atlantic give but an indication of the bonding of the civilized world by that means of communication which knows neither time nor space. As great a change has taken place in the requirement for means of military communication since our last great war as has taken place in commercial life since the introduction of the telephone, and the demand for instant and efficient communication is more insistent in war than in peace in the proportion that war is more desperate and deadly than the peaceful pursuits of commerce and trade. This is an age of specialties, and the service of military communication is entrusted to a special department of the army, called the Signal Corps.
