Infrared and Millimeter Waves, Volume 16: Electromagnetic Waves in Matter, Part III deals with electromagnetic devices based on infrared and millimeter waves. This book covers infrared optoacoustics; freestanding fine-wire grids for use in millimeter- and submillimeter-wave spectroscopy; and population inversion and far-infrared (FIR) emission of hot electrons in semiconductors. The theory on distributed feedback lasers with weak and strong modulations is also considered. This monograph is comprised of six chapters and begins with a discussion on the optoacoustic effect in the infrared, with emphasis on where optoacoustics and infrared physics combine in the areas of Fourier spectroscopy, optically pumped FIR lasers, and photothermal non-destructive remote material evaluation. The next chapter presents the basic principles of the theory on distributed feedback lasers with weak and strong modulations, together with results of analytical and numerical calculations. The following chapters focus on the construction of freestanding fine-wire grids for use in millimeter- and submillimeter-wave spectroscopy; general equations for the mean distance between impurity ions in solid-state devices, signal vectors in communication theory, and stars in the solar neighborhood; and prospects for hot-carrier systems in active FIR solid-state devices. The final chapter is devoted to quenched germanium and its FIR optical properties. This text will be a valuable resource for physicists and electronics and electrical engineers.

This volume discusses electromagnetic waves in matter. The first chapter covers the properties of the dielectric materials, which is then followed by a discussion of far-infrared spectroscopy on high polymers. Chapter 3 tackles submillimeter solid-state physics, and Chapter 4 reviews the theory of infrared and far-infrared free-carrier behavior in semiconductors. The improvements in pyroelectric detectors are then reviewed. The sixth chapter discusses cyclotron and Zeeman transitions in photoexcited semiconductors at far infrared, while the seventh chapter discusses high temperature infrared reflectivity spectroscopy. Chapter 8 covers millimeter and submillimeter waves' interaction with giant atoms. The last chapter is about spectroscopy of InAs-GaSb layered structures. This book will be of great use to researchers or professionals whose work involves infrared and millimeter waves.

Electrodynamics Of Solids written by Martin Dressel and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-01-17 with Science categories.

The authors of this book present a thorough discussion of the optical properties of solids, with a focus on electron states and their response to electrodynamic fields. A review of the fundamental aspects of the propagation of electromagnetic fields, and their interaction with condensed matter, is given. This is followed by a discussion of the optical properties of metals, semiconductors, and collective states of solids such as superconductors. Theoretical concepts, measurement techniques and experimental results are covered in three interrelated sections. Well-established, mature fields are discussed (for example, classical metals and semiconductors) together with modern topics at the focus of current interest. The substantial reference list included will also prove to be a valuable resource for those interested in the electronic properties of solids. The book is intended for use by advanced undergraduate and graduate students, and researchers active in the fields of condensed matter physics, materials science and optical engineering.

Two of the most powerful tools used to study magnetic materials are inelastic neutron scattering and THz spectroscopy. Because the measured spectra provide a dynamical fingerprint of a magnetic material, those tools enable scientists to unravel the structure of complex magnetic states and to determine the microcscopic interactions that produce them. This book discusses the experimental techniques of inleastic neutron scattering and THz spectroscopy and provides the theoretical tools required to analyze their measurements using spin-wave theory. For most materials, this analysis can resolve the microscopic magnetic interactions such as exchange, anisotropy, and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. Assuming a background in elementary statistical mechanics and a familiarity with the quantized harmonic oscillator, this book presents a comprehensive review of spin-wave theory and its applications to both inelastic neutron scattering and THz spectroscopy. Spin-wave theory is used to study several model magnetic systems, including non-collinear magnets such as spirals and cycloids that are produced by geometric frustration, competing exchange interactions, or Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. Several case studies utilizing spin-wave theory to analyze inelastic neutron-scattering and THz spectroscopy measurements are presented. These include both single crystals and powders and both oxides and molecule-based magnets. In addition to sketching the numerical techniques used to fit dynamical spectra based on microscopic models, this book also contains over 70 exercises that can be performed by beginning graduate students.

Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) is a unique technique for characterizing the response of materials and devices in the far-infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Based on the measurement of transmitted or reflected ultra-short electromagnetic pulses and on a Fourier-transform of the recorded waveforms, THz-TDS permits fast and precise determination of the permittivity or permeability of materials over a wide bandwidth. This book is devoted to the determination of this spectral response of samples from the recorded waveforms.
