Mimicry And Meaning Structure And Semiotics Of Biological Mimicry written by Timo Maran and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-01-11 with Science categories.

The present book analyses critically the tripartite mimicry model (consisting of the mimic, model and receiver species) and develops semiotic tools for comparative analysis. It is proposed that mimicry has a double structure where sign relations in communication are in constant interplay with ecological relations between species. Multi-constructivism and toolbox-like conceptual methods are advocated for, as these allow taking into account both the participants’ Umwelten as well as cultural meanings related to specific mimicry cases. From biosemiotic viewpoint, mimicry is a sign relation, where deceptively similar messages are perceived, interpreted and acted upon. Focusing on living subjects and their communication opens up new ways to understand mimicry. Such view helps to explain the diversity of mimicry as well as mimicry studies and treat these in a single framework. On a meta-level, a semiotic view allows critical reflection on the use of mimicry concept in modern biology. The author further discusses interpretations of mimicry in contemporary semiotics, analyses mimicry as communicative interaction, relates mimicry to iconic signs and focuses on abstract resemblances in mimicry. Theoretical discussions are illustrated with detailed excursions into practical mimicry cases in nature (brood parasitism, eyespots, myrmecomorphy, etc.). The book concludes with a conviction that mimicry should be treated in a broader semiotic-ecological context as it presumes the existence of ecological codes and other sign conventions in the ecosystem.

Library Journal Best Reference 2009 "An excellent gateway to further examination of any of the subdisciplines of relationship science, or as a research tool in its own right." —Library Journal Relationships are fundamental to nearly all domains of human activity, from birth to death. When people participate in healthy, satisfying relationships, they live, work, and learn more effectively. When relationships are distressed or dysfunctional, people are less happy, less healthy, and less productive. Few aspects of human experience have as broad or as deep effects on our lives. The Encyclopedia of Human Relationships offers an interdisciplinary view of all types of human associations—friends, lovers, spouses, roommates, coworkers, teammates, parents and children, cousins, siblings, acquaintances, neighbors, business associates, and so forth. These three volumes provide a state-of-the-art review of the extensive theories, concepts, and empirical findings about human relationships. Mimicry Evolution Marvels explores the captivating world where natural selection drives remarkable adaptations. Mimicry, a strategy used by both animals and plants, involves deceiving predators or securing prey through resemblance. The book elucidates how harmless species evolve to resemble dangerous ones (Batesian mimicry) or how predators lure unsuspecting victims, highlighting the genetic basis of these evolutionary marvels. The book progresses from foundational concepts of evolution and natural selection to specific case studies, differentiating between defensive, predatory, and other forms of mimicry. It showcases how mimicking venomous snakes or using bioluminescent lures are powerful examples of adaptation. Drawing from field studies, experimental research, and genomic analyses, the book integrates insights from genetics, ecology, and evolutionary biology. The book uniquely emphasizes the molecular underpinnings of mimicry, providing a deeper understanding of the genetic changes that drive these remarkable adaptations. This exploration of mimicry connects to practical fields such as biomimicry and conservation biology, demonstrating its relevance beyond academic study. Understanding mimicry can inform strategies for protecting endangered species and developing new technologies inspired by nature's ingenuity. This book is valuable for students, researchers, and science enthusiasts interested in the intricate dance of evolution and the marvels of biodiversity.

In this Research Topic, several groups of researchers from both social and biological psychology summarize their findings addressing the relation between emotion and behavior. The Reflective-Impulsive Model (RIM) (Strack & Deutsch, 2004; 2014 in press) serves as a general orientation and provides a link to integrate the results from seemingly divergent perspectives. The contributions focuses on different types of emotional behaviors, like facial expressions and impulsive reactions. They address the central issue of approach vs. avoidance and include clinical topics like addiction and fear. Methodologically, the contributions are predominantly experimental and are partly based on manipulations in the context of virtual reality.
