In the first part of this book, we will look at the foundational concepts of several yoga philosophies, especially pertaining to the nature of the mind. We will begin with the philosophy of Samkhya which explains the creation of the universe, enfoldment of cosmic consciousness, development of the individual soul, and to the rise of the operative faculties of the mind in perception, feeling, ego, memory and intelligence. In the second part, we will look at the tradition of yoga and its techniques to develop the aspirant to rise above physical and mental agitation and restraint which holds one back from emerging into higher knowledge of the self. In the third, we will look at the basic principles of ayurveda including its perspectives to establish balance and harmony of body and mental states. Through the universal principles of ayurveda, knowledge of ones physical and mental constitution can lead to continuum of health and restoration of disease into a balance state of individuals. Its goal is to achieve equilibrium between body and mind by the use of a number of disciplines diet, medicinal herbs, and detoxification and rejuvenator programs, breathe exercises, asanas, meditation, and lifestyle changes to maintain ones body and mental type. Ayurveda and Yogic traditions offer a profound and intuitive insight into the nature of mind, root cause of mental disease, mental afflictions, deep seated impression and subtle desire (vasana) which lead to mental bondage, unconscious (instinctive, habitual behavior), blockage in adversities, and unawareness in the play of misery and pain. Together, they can expunge mental impurities, transpire negativity, develop conscious awareness, control of thought movement, and sharpen concentration and meditation to bring about transparency into ones true existence. Through the cultivation of yogic disciplines one can attain liberation or peace of mind through the actions of moral and righteous behavior (Yama and Niyama), selfless service (Karma yoga), devotional practices (Bhakti yoga), will and meditation disciplines (Raja Yoga) and intuitive knowledge (Jnana yoga). These are not interdependent of one another but collectively move one towards the goal of all yoga in the attainment of self realization.

Stephen Parker has produced a profound explication of the psychological dimension of Yoga from the standpoint of classical Raja-yoga. I would recommend Clearing the Path for all students of Yoga and meditation who truly aspire to a deeper level of practice.- David Frawley (Pandit Vamadeva Shastri), director, American Institute of Vedic Studies; author, Yoga and Ayurveda and Vedic Yoga: The Path of the Rishi. Clearing the Path is a 'must read' for any sincere and dedicated aspirant of classical Yoga. This grand treatise by Stephen Parker (Stoma) is one of the best ever explorations bringing together ancient and modern perspectives of the mind and mindfulness. It provides integrative and wholesome answers to inquisitive questions about the mind, how to clear away all the hurdles, how to make it our friend, and finally how to go beyond it, thus merging our limited individuality into infinite universality. The Yogic path is very clearly laid out; the rationale is provided in depth. It is now our call to walk the path, the grand path to liberation. - Yogacharya Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani, MD, CYT, chairman, ICYER at Ananda Ashram, Pondicherry, India. Dr. Parker; with beautiful clarity, articulates two of my favorite areas of study - the expansive psychology of the Yoga Sutras and recent revelations of neuroscience, which reveal and validate the transformative power of that ancient map of consciousness - it's a gem. - Jim Nelson, MA, LP, author, Running on Empty. It is a marvelous attempt to unveil the subtle shades of emotions blossoming into an all-pervading awareness. - Subodh Tiwari, director, Kaivalyadhama Yoga Institute, Lonavla, India

In Western therapies, mind, body, and spirit are separated into three distinct areas, with specialists who deal with each facet of the human being independently. However, in the yogic model of well-being, medical, psychological, and spiritual needs are dealt with synergistically. Elements of yoga practice have become increasingly popular with both medical and mental health professionals, as well as the subject of much empirical research. Meditation, one of yoga's most important practices, has been found effective in the treatment of a wide variety of physical and psychological problems, including coronary artery disease, chronic pain, anxiety, and depression. Healing the Whole Person is a guide to help individuals improve bodily and behavioral functions through the integration of holistic yoga, meditation, and ayurveda practices. This book also takes a look into spiritual facets of psychotherapy and the role of a collective consciousness in personal well-being.
