All of them make fundamental use, in one way or another, of logical semiotics, the modern trivium of systematic syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, and some of them, of mereology, the general theory of parts and whole. The book includes 20 articles, dealing with such subjects as 'Logical semiotics and logistic grammar', 'The semiotics of mathematical practice', 'Husserlian parts and wholes', 'Compound individuals and the languages of science', and discusses work of Geach, Lesniewski, Carnap, Peirce, and Quine.

Process and Analysis brings together an unprecedented collection of the world's leading contemporary process and analytic philosophers to explore philosophical topics of common interest. The contributors examine a wide variety of explicit and implicit commonalities and differences of approach to such central philosophical issues as the nature and status of events, time, space, relations, particulars, and God. This unique collection demonstrates that both traditions have important things to say to one another. In fact, a largely ignored conversation between the two traditions has been carried on since at least the days of Whitehead's influence on early Cambridge analytic philosophy. This long awaited volume is an invaluable research tool for scholars and students alike working in the areas of analytic and process philosophy.

The essays in this volume constitute a portion of the research program being carried out by the International Society for Phenomenology and the Human Sciences. Established as an affiliate society of the World Institute for Ad vanced Phenomenological Research and Learning in 1976, in Arezzo, Italy, by the president of the Institute, Dr Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka, this particular society is devoted to an exploration of the relevance of phenomenological methods and insights for an understanding of the origins and goals of the specialised human sciences. The essays printed in the first part of the book were originally presented at the Second Congress of this society held at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, 12-14 July 1979. The second part of the volume consists of selected essays from the third convention (the Eleventh International Congress of Phenomenology of the World Phenomen ology Institute) held in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1981. With the third part of this book we pass into the "Human Rights" issue as treated by the World Phenomenology Institute at the Interamerican Philosophy Congress held in Tallahassee, Florida, also in 1981. The volume opens with a mono graph by Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka on the foundations of ethics in the moral practice within the life-world and the social world shown as clearly distinct. The main ideas of this work had been presented by Tymieniecka as lead lectures to the three conferences giving them a tight research-project con sistency.

The philosophical papers collected together in this volume cover a variety of topics centering around the three items of the title. Mereology, the theory of part-whole, appears and reappears throughout as a kind of basso ostinato for much that is said. For its full effect, however, mereology must be combined with various items treated in metalogic or logical semiotics, the modern trivium of syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. When pressed for their total philosophic richness, all of these subjects flow over into topics of perennial interest in metaphysics, including even metaphysical theology. It is thought that the treatment here brings these various subjects together in a new light and in an exact way. As a result, they are seen to gain in richness, scope, and depth, and a basis provided for the study of how intimately they "interanimate" each other. Each paper here is a critical and/or constructive adventure of ideas, not necessarily agreeing in all details with every other. Even though they are concerned with a considerable variety of philosophical topics, there is nonetheless a common methodology throughout, namely, the logica utens of first order quantification theory - or its algebraic surrogate - together with the first-order metalogic based on it, which are thought to provide the bedrock of sound philosophical method. This view has been spelled out in considerable detail in the author's previous publications and is further develop here in important ways. "Richard M. Martin's work display a wealth of ideas, proposals, and formal analyses, always on top of the ideal of precision and rigour which were so important to him" Lingua e Stile, 1988 Of interest to: Philosophers, linguists, logicians

For the first time, this volume presents a series of critical and constructive studies in the philosophy of J. N. Findlay. His contributions to both historical and systematic philosophy are examined by outstanding authors in the field, many of whom are his former students and colleagues. The value of these essays is heightened by Findlay's own contributions: two autobiographical chapters detail the evolution of his thought and relationships, and in a final section of comments, he evaluates and responds to the studies in this collection.

Formal And Informal Methods In Philosophy written by and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-31 with Philosophy categories.
This book examines the tension between formal and informal methods in philosophy. The rise of analytic philosophy was accompanied by the development of formal logic and many successful applications of formal methods. But analytical philosophy does not rely on formal methods alone. Elements of broadly understood informal logic and logical semiotics, procedures used in natural sciences and humanities, and various kinds of intuition also belong to the philosopher’s toolkit. Papers gathered in the book concern the opposition formality–informality as well as other pairs, such as methodology versus metaphilosophy, interdisciplinarity versus intradisciplinarity, and methodological uniformity versus diversity of sciences. Problems of the nature of logic and the explanatory role of mathematical theories are also discussed.
