Mind Second Edition written by Paul Thagard and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-02-04 with Psychology categories.

Cognitive science approaches the study of mind and intelligence from an interdisciplinary perspective, working at the intersection of philosophy, psychology, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, linguistics, and anthropology. With Mind, Paul Thagard offers an introduction to this interdisciplinary field for readers who come to the subject with very different backgrounds. It is suitable for classroom use by students with interests ranging from computer science and engineering to psychology and philosophy. Thagard's systematic descriptions and evaluations of the main theories of mental representation advanced by cognitive scientists allow students to see that there are many complementary approaches to the investigation of mind. The fundamental theoretical perspectives he describes include logic, rules, concepts, analogies, images, and connections (artificial neural networks). The discussion of these theories provides an integrated view of the different achievements of the various fields of cognitive science. This second edition includes substantial revision and new material. Part I, which presents the different theoretical approaches, has been updated in light of recent work the field. Part II, which treats extensions to cognitive science, has been thoroughly revised, with new chapters added on brains, emotions, and consciousness. Other additions include a list of relevant Web sites at the end of each chapter and a glossary at the end of the book. As in the first edition, each chapter concludes with a summary and suggestions for further reading.

Mind written by Paul Thagard and has been published by Cambridge, Mass. : MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Philosophy categories.

Cognitive science is the interdisciplinary study of mind and intelligence, embracing psychology, philosophy, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, linguistics, and anthropology. Paul Thagard's accessible, concise, and integrated text presupposes no special preparation in any of these fields. Thagard systematically describes and evaluates the main computational theories of mental representation that have been advocated by cognitive scientists, including logic, rules, concepts, analogies, images, and connections (neural networks). He considers the major challenges to the computational-representational view of mind and discusses emotions, consciousness, physical and social environments, dynamical systems, and mathematical knowledge. Teaching cognitive science is difficult, Thagard observes, because students come to this multidisciplinary subject with widely different competencies, backgrounds, and interests. Mind solves this dilemma by making logic comprehensible to psychology students, computer algorithms comprehensible to English students, and philosophical controversies comprehensible to computer science students. Each chapter concludes with helpful summaries, discussion questions, and suggestions for further reading. Mind is ideal for introductory courses on Cognitive Science, and is also useful as a supplement to courses on cognitive psychology, educational psychology, philosophy of mind, and artificial intelligence. Mental Reality written by Galen Strawson and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994 with Body, Mind & Spirit categories.

In Mental Reality, Galen Strawson argues that much contemporary philosophy of mind gives undue primacy of place to publicly observable phenomena, nonmental phenomena, and behavioral phenomena (understood as publicly observable phenomena) in its account of the nature of mind. It does so at the expense of the phenomena of conscious experience. Strawson describes an alternative position, "naturalized Cartesianism," which couples the materialist view that mind is entirely natural and wholly physical with a fully realist account of the nature of conscious experience. Naturalized Cartesianism is an adductive (as opposed to reductive) form of materialism. Adductive materialists don't claim that conscious experience is anything less than we ordinarily conceive it to be, in being wholly physical. They claim instead that the physical is something more than we ordinarily conceive it to be, given that many of the wholly physical goings-on in the brain constitute -- literally are -- conscious experiences as we ordinarily conceive them.

Designing With The Mind In Mind written by Jeff Johnson and has been published by Morgan Kaufmann this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-05-20 with Computers categories.

Early user interface (UI) practitioners were trained in cognitive psychology, from which UI design rules were based. But as the field evolves, designers enter the field from many disciplines. Practitioners today have enough experience in UI design that they have been exposed to design rules, but it is essential that they understand the psychology behind the rules in order to effectively apply them. In Designing with the Mind in Mind, Jeff Johnson, author of the best selling GUI Bloopers, provides designers with just enough background in perceptual and cognitive psychology that UI design guidelines make intuitive sense rather than being just a list of rules to follow. - The first practical, all-in-one source for practitioners on user interface design rules and why, when and how to apply them - Provides just enough background into the reasoning behind interface design rules that practitioners can make informed decisions in every project - Gives practitioners the insight they need to make educated design decisions when confronted with tradeoffs, including competing design rules, time constrictions, or limited resources

The Science Of The Mind written by Owen J. Flanagan and has been published by Mit Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1984 with Psychology categories.

This is a lucid and penetrating introduction to the philosophical assumptions and implications of several major psychological theories. It critically analyzes the theories of such major figures as Descartes, William James, Freud, Skinner, Piaget, and Kohlberg, as well as significant contemporary movements such as cognitive psychology, artificial intelligence, and sociobiology. The book makes an original contribution by showing how such traditional philosophical problems as the nature of the mind-body relation, knowledge of other minds, free-will, unity of consciousness, personal identity, self-knowledge, intentionality, rationality, and reductionism figure within psychology and how psychology contributes to the solution of these philosophical problems.
