In this, the first full-length study of Clayton Eshleman's poetry, poet and scholar Paul Christensen descends into the torch-lit underworld, the cave of the soul, that Eshleman has been exploring in his work for more than three decades. "In the caves of Dordogne," Christensen writes, "Eshleman discovered an underworld in actuality, a labyrinth in which Paleolithic humanity daubed and slashed their marks, their primordial psychic images." He also found a controlling metaphor for all his mature poetry: "For Eshleman, these markings were a first language, and they represent the primal separation between sleep and waking," between the darkness of pre-consciousness and the light of self-awareness, between the amoral animal (which simply "is") and the guilty man (who is tortured by the realization "I am").

As a boy growing up in New York City, Kevin P. Gilheany had two dreams: to join the Coast Guard, and to play the bagpipes. But by the time he finished high school he was overweight, had a drinking problem, and couldn’t swim. Undeterred by the doubts of the folks at home, he decided to enlist in the Coast Guard anyway. With great determination, and some divine intervention, he passed the swim test and graduated from boot camp, thus beginning an eventful and diverse twenty-year career in the 1980s and 1990s Coast Guard. He set a goal for himself to get command of his own patrol boat, and along the way he was involved in capturing drug smugglers, rescuing hundreds of Haitian migrants at sea, recovering Space Shuttle Challenger debris, surviving a “hooligan navy” experience on a Coast Guard workboat, coordinating search and rescue during the famed “Perfect Storm,” and leading armed boardings of ships following the terrorist attacks of 9/11. When he was asked by one of his men, who was dying from brain cancer, to play bagpipes at his retirement ceremony, Kevin started down a new path to have bagpipers officially recognized as part of the Coast Guard. This ultimately led a boy who couldn’t swim to fulfill both of his childhood dreams and leave a lasting legacy by founding the U.S. Coast Guard Pipe Band.

The Spirit of the Muse is an illuminating series of intimate conversations with some of the greatest contemporary classical performers, artists and writers. Presented in this unique collection are rare insights into the creative process and responses to questions such as: Does great personal suffering help produce great art? What are the internal processes that precede the surrender to the moment(s) of creativity? How does one balance the imperatives of structure with spontaneity? What is the role of an audience for an artist? How does he or she respond to critics and criticism? Is it useful to be a "good" human being to be a "good" artist? Does the creation of an enduring work of art compensate for a fear of mortality? Ranged in the book are musicians such as Pandit Ravi Shankar and Yehudi Menuhin together, Zubin Mehta and L. Subramaniam; painters Satish Gujral and Anjolie Ela Menon; sculptors Amarnath Sehgal and K. S. Radhakrishnan; dancers Leela Samson and Mrinalini Sarabhai; filmmakers Adoor Gopalakrishnan and Mrinal Sen; playwright Habib Tanvir; poet Gulzar; and writers Mahasweta Devi and Indira Goswami.

Nobody writes like Nell Dunn... always communally, with rare honesty, with love, and with calm and ground-breaking understanding... It's glorious. Ali Smith The Muse is all it could be; an act of sharing that goes beyond particular experience to take us to a happy realm of natural sisterhood. TLS Nell Dunn has perfect pitch for the words we use and for the loves and mysteries of the human heart. Carmen Callil Defiant, funny and exhilarating. The Muse is so high-spirited and full of a sense of adventure. Margaret Drabble This slim volume is entertaining... You long to know more about Nell's life Daily Mail The Muse is the story of a life-changing friendship. It starts with Nell's account of a chance meeting with Josie at the age of 22. Josie teaches her how to live for moment, how to have adventures and find the sweetness of life even in hardship. This was the Sixties, a time of literary and sexual experimentation, of the breakdown of old barriers and inhibitions Even as she was hooking up with dodgy men, Josie always carried herself like a star, and as the inspiration for the ground-breaking novel of working class women Poor Cow and the play Steaming - both of which were made into movies - she became one, feted by producers on Broadway. Life is the thing, was Josie's motto. But where would her philosophy of taking no care for tomorrow lead her? In prose of unique clarity and simplicity that always gets straight to the heart of matter, The Muse follows this friendship over the decades.
