Minervas Gothics written by Elizabeth Neiman and has been published by University of Wales Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-02-15 with Literary Criticism categories.

Between 1790 and 1820, William Lane’s Minerva Press published an unprecedented number of circulating-library novels by obscure female authors. Because these novels catered to the day’s fashion for sentimental themes and Gothic romance, they were and continue to be generally dismissed as ephemera. Recently, however, scholars interested in historicizing Romantic conceptions of genius and authorship have begun to write Minerva back into literary history. By making Minerva novels themselves the centre of the analysis, Minerva’s Gothics illustrates how Romantic ‘anxiety’ is better conceptualized as a mutual though not entirely equitable ‘exchange’, a dynamic interrelationship between Minerva novels and Romantic-era politics and poetics that started in 1780, when Lane began publishing novels with some regularity. Reading Minerva novels for their shared popular conventions demonstrates that circulating-library novelists collectively recirculate, engage and modify commonplaces about women’s nature, the social order and, most importantly, the very Romantic redefinitions of authorship and literature that render their novels not worth reading. By recognizing Minerva’s collaborative rather than merely derivative authorial model, a forgotten pathway is restored between first-generation Romantic reactions to popular print culture and Percy Shelley’s influential conceptualization of the poet in A Defence of Poetry.

Current Controversies In Philosophy Of Film written by Katherine Thomson-Jones and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-02 with Philosophy categories.

This volume advances the contemporary debate on five central issues in the philosophy of film. These issues concern the relation between the art and technology of film, the nature of film realism, how narrative fiction films narrate, how we engage emotionally with films, and whether films can philosophize. Two new essays by leading figures in the field present different views on each issue. The paired essays contain significant points of both agreement and disagreement; new theories and frameworks are proposed at the same time as authors review the current state of debate. Given their combination of richness and clarity, the essays in this volume can effectively engage both students, undergraduate or graduate, and academic researchers.

Down From The Attic written by John T. Soister and has been published by McFarland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-09 with Performing Arts categories.

Much has been written (and rewritten) about classic horror and science fiction films like Nosferatu and Metropolis, as well as not-so-classic pictures like Bride of the Monster and The Hideous Sun Demon. Yet some genre films have fallen through the cracks. The 24 films--some elusive, some easily found on YouTube--examined in this book all suffered critical neglect and were prematurely stacked in the attic. The authors bring them back into the light, beginning with Der Tunnel (1915), about the building of a transatlantic tunnel, and ending with The Emperor's Baker--The Baker's Emperor (1951), a bizarre Marxist take on the Golem legend. A variety of thrillers are covered--Fog (1933), Return of the Terror (1934), Forgotten Faces (1928)--along with such sci-fi leaps into the future as The Sky Ranger (1921), High Treason (1929) and Just Imagine (1930). Early adaptations include The Man Who Laughs (1921), The Monkey's Paw (1923), Hound of the Baskervilles (1937) and Sweeney Todd (1928). Rare stills and background material are included in a discussion of Hispanic vintage horror. The career of exploitation auteur, Bud Pollard (The Horror, 1933) is examined.

Autobiographics written by Leigh Gilmore and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

In the first comprehensive feminist critique of autobiography as a genre, Leigh Gilmore incorporates writings that have not up to now been considered part of the autobiographical tradition. Offering subtle and perceptive readings of a wide variety of texts-- from the confessions of medieval mystics to contemporary works by Chicana and lesbian writers-- she identifies an innovative practice of "autobiographics" which covers the entire spectrum of women's self-representation.
