This book entitled “Mining Impacts and their Environmental Problems” presents a comprehensive view on various mining activities and a wide spectrum of environmental challenges associated with it. Case studies presented across global south such as Asia, Africa, and Latin America, are the first of its kind which presents a holistic and deep insight (into instead of about?) about this pressing environmental issue. In this book, thirteen chapters present various issues ranging from gold, silver, chromium, lead, coal mining, and its impacts on ambient environmental (soil, water, biodiversity) degradation and ultimately on(healthy living environment instead of human health living? ) human health living in the surrounding area. For this purpose, (different methodologies have been used) they have used different methodologies( for example instead of like using) like using (a) water quality index, hydro-chemical characterization, numerical simulation to identify the extent of pollution caused(by instead of due to?) due to mining activities. Later it (the book) advocates the usage of advance mining technologies such as advanced oxidation processes, decarbonization technologies and a biotechnological approach for the treatment of wastewater being generated due to mining activities or minimizing overall environmental degradation. Finally, it emphasizes on assessing risk zone delineation, vulnerability analysis using cutting edge tools like numerical simulation, GIS and remote sensing, which will help designing robust management plans and sustainable transitions, critically helpful for policy makers or decision makers.

"Over the past five hundred years, North Americans have increasingly turned to mining to produce many of their basic social and cultural objects. From cell phones to cars and roadways, metal pots to wall tile and even talcum powder, minerals products have become central to modern North American life. As this process has unfolded, mining has also indelibly shaped the natural world and North Americans' relationship with it. Mountains have been honeycombed, rivers poisoned, and forests leveled. The effects of these environmental transformations have fallen unevenly across North American societies. Mining North America examines these developments. Drawing on the work of scholars from Mexico, the United States, and Canada, this book explores how mining has shaped North America over the last half millennium. It covers an array of minerals and geographies while seeking to draw mining into the core debates that animate North American environmental history generally. Taken together, the authors' contributions make a powerful case for the centrality of mining in forging North American environments and societies"--Provided by publisher.

This book is one of the outcomes of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop “Approaches to handling environmental problems in the mining and metallurgical regions of NIS countries” held in Mariupol, Ukraine on 5-7 September 2002. It include papers written by some of the leading specialists in the field of mining and metallurgy, and by environment specialists who are active in this sector. Readers will notice that some common environmental problems seen in the mining and metallurgical industries are described and that their influence on the health of the population are discussed. Examples of best practice in the field are given both from EU countries and from Central and Eastern European nations, especially from the Newly Independent States (NIS). Some of the latest technologies involved in the elimination of hazardous emissions, in sewage treatment and the handling of wastes in the metallurgical and mining industries are presented and we hope that they may open the way for more West-East, East-West and East-East technology and know-how exchange. In preparing this book, thanks are due to Marina Butorina, Linda Döring and Olaf Gramkow for their competent advice in respect of translations, lay-out and handling of the texts. We also grateful to NATO ́s Scientific Affairs Division for the support with the workshop, whose benefits are already being felt in both Mariupol and elsewhere in Eastern Europe.

Since the dawn of civilisation until the last decades of the past century, mining activity, especially that concerning base and precious metals, represented a resource for human population, owing to its importance in many fields of interest. By the second half of the last century, however, mining activity declined until final closure in the face of developing countries, owing to decreasing mineral resources and to metal price drop. In this book, the effects of former mine activities and the related environmental problems are discussed, with the ultimate goal of investigating the fate of potentially toxic elements in the environment and their impact on the conterminous land.

Negative environmental events make the headlines. Mining industry examples are the recent incidents at Summitville, Colorado, US, and the cyanide leak at Cambria Resource's Omai Operation in Guyana. In this volatile atmosphere, the publication of the Mining Environmental Handbook comes at an opportune time. It presents an objective, comprehensive and integrated examination of the effects of mining on the environment, and the environmental laws that deal with mining. Though stressing activities in the United States of America, it covers all of North America.North American environmental standards are currently being exported around the world. Consequently, this handbook will be of prime interest in countries that are now coming to terms with mining environmentalism. It should benefit working engineers and environmentalists, manufacturers, legislators, regulators, financiers and journalists. It has been selected as a university textbook. Finally, it will be an indispensable reference during serious discussions about mining environmentalism.
