This book explores the impact that politics had on the management of mental health care at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. 1888 and the introduction of the Local Government Act marked a turning point in which democratically elected bodies became responsible for the management of madness for the first time. With its focus on London in the period leading up to the First World War, it offers a new way to look at institutions and to consider their connections to wider issues that were facing the capital and the nation. The chapters that follow place London at the heart of international networks and debates relating to finance, welfare, architecture, scientific and medical initiatives, and the developing responses to immigrant populations. Overall, it shines a light on the relationships between mental health policies and other ideological priorities.

With antecedents dating back to the Middle Ages, the community garden is more popular than ever as a means of procuring the freshest food possible and instilling community cohesion. But as Micheline Nilsen shows, the small-garden movement, which gained impetus in the nineteenth century as rural workers crowded into industrial cities, was for a long time primarily a repository of ideas concerning social reform, hygienic improvement, and class mobility. Complementing efforts by worker cooperatives, unions, and social legislation, the provision of small garden plots offered some relief from bleak urban living conditions. Urban planners often thought of such gardens as a way to insert "lungs" into a city. Standing at the intersection of a number of disciplines--including landscape studies, horticulture, and urban history-- The Working Man’s Green Space focuses on the development of allotment gardens in European countries in the nearly half-century between the Franco-Prussian War and World War I, when the French Third Republic, the German Empire, and the late Victorian era in England saw the development of unprecedented measures to improve the lot of the "laboring classes." Nilsen shows how community gardening is inscribed within a social contract that differs from country to country, but how there is also an underlying aesthetic and social significance to these gardens that transcends national borders.

The Case Of Peter Pan written by Jacqueline Rose and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994-01-14 with Literary Criticism categories.

What does Peter Pan have to say about our conception of childhood, about how we understand the child's and our own relationship to language, sexuality, and death? What can Peter Pan tell us about the theatrical, literary, and educational institutions of which it is a part? In a new preface written especially for this edition, Rose accounts for some of the new developments since her book's first publication in 1984. She discusses some of Peter Pan's new guises and their implications. From Spielberg's Hook, to the lesbian production of the play at the London Drill Hall in 1991, to debates in the English House of Lords, to a newly claimed status as the icon of a transvestite culture, Peter Pan continues to demonstrate its bizarre renewability as a cultural fetish of our times.

The Samuel Gompers Papers Vol 5 written by Samuel Gompers and has been published by University of Illinois Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Labor movement categories.

The years 1898-1902 were prosperous for the U.S., marked by economic growth and industrial expansion, a rising material standard of living, and low unemployment. The period was one of unprecedented growth for the American Federation of Labor (AFL), and it found Samuel Gompers continuing to advocate the organization of all workers and focusing his efforts on establishment of local and national trade unions, central labor bodies, and state federations, and on the affiliation of these organizations with the AFL. From reviews of earlier volumes "This collection belongs on the shelf of anyone teaching American labor history, but it also should prove useful to scholars with related interests." -- James Grossman, Illinois Historical Journal "Distinguished and invaluable. . . . Labor historians would be well advised to clear shelf space for it." -- Bruce Laurie, Industrial and Labor Relations Review
