Is there an allure of spoiled places? Spoil islands are overlooked places that combine dirt with paradise, waste-land with “brave new world,” and wildness with human intervention. Although they are mundane products of dredging, these islands form an uninvestigated archipelago that demonstrates the potential value and contested re-valuation of landscapes of waste. To explore these islands, Spoil Island: Reading the Makeshift Archipelago navigates a course along the U.S. east coast, moving from New York City to Florida. Along the way, a general populace squats, picnics, and reflects on the islands, while other forces are also at work. New York City parks commissioner Robert Moses first deplores then adopts Hoffman and Swinburne Islands, UN Secretary General U Thant meditates on the East River’s Belmont Island, businessman John D. MacArthur rejects the purchase of Peanut Island, artist Christo surrounds Miami’s spoil islands, Key Westers debate the futures of two spoil islands that mark their sunset view, and artist Robert Smithson augments this archipelago materially and conceptually. Historical and contemporary stories highlight each island’s often contradictory ecologies that pair nature with infrastructure, public concerns with private development, rationalized urbanism with artistic impulse, and order with disorder. Spoil islands put you in places you normally wouldn’t—and perhaps shouldn’t—be. To examine these marginalized topographies is to understand emergent concerns of twenty-first-century place-making, public space, and natural and artificial infrastructure. Today, spoil islands constitute an unprecedented public commons, where human agency and nature are inextricably linked. Spoil Island will be of interest to anyone working in the areas of architecture, cultural history, cultural geography, environmental studies, or environmental philosophy. Linking the islands with their environmental aesthetics, Charlie Hailey provides a lively and critical topography of places that play a part in current events and local situations with global implications.

From humble beginnings, Loma Linda University Health has grown to become a major health care and educational center impacting people around the world. Back in 1905, pioneer Seventh-day Adventist Ellen G. White insisted that such an institution be established somewhere in Southern California, near Redlands and Riverside. She also predicted properties would become available that were far below their initial price. Fellow Adventist pioneer John Burden found a property that had failed in two previous business ventures--first as a hotel, then as a sanitarium. The asking price was already well below the property's value, and the buildings were already fully furnished and stocked. "Make an offer," White told him. With his own money as down payment, Burden set in motion what has become a network of multiple hospitals and professional schools. Miracle upon miracle was needed to keep the fledgling organization afloat. Be inspired by the way the hand of Providence has--and continues to--work on behalf of Loma Linda.

In A Meeting of the People Roderick MacLeod and Mary Anne Poutanen look at the Protestant public education system and the communities that established, and were served by, its schools, from the origins of public education in 1801 to the dissolution of confessional school boards in 1998. They focus on key issues such as class, ethnicity, religion, gender, health and welfare, patriotism, and the nature of local administration, bringing to life the people who attempted to establish and maintain schools and considering relationships between school trustees, parents, teachers, and the wider public. Their analysis shows that communities recognized the importance of providing schooling, despite what were often bleak circumstances. The authors show that Protestant families often had to make a difficult choice between supporting better educational facilities in a central place far away or encouraging the survival of the local community through maintaining one of its key institutions, the local school. They explore the ambiguous nature of Protestant education, at times understood as schooling reserved for a religious minority and at others as a liberal approach similar to public schooling across North America. The Protestant community, begun as a British element within a small colony, has developed into a diverse array of people from across the religious spectrum, periodically redefining itself to meet the needs of a changing Quebec society.

Building on the history documented in Chronicles of Religious Science Volume I, this second volume opens with the transition of Ernest Holmes in 1960. Each chapter highlights the growth and decisions of the Church of Religious Science and Religious Science International as the organizations grew and eventually merged back into one whole in 2012. Based on interviews, quotes, meeting minutes and commentary, these two volumes capture the essence of Religious Science and preserve its history for future generations. Chronicles of Religious Science Volume II is truly a work of heart by Dr. Marilyn Leo, “Living Treasure” and former neighbor to Ernest and Hazel Holmes. Dr. Leo delves deep into the oracles and wisdom of the Science of Mind Archives to share key events in the evolution of Science of Mind. In this book, we honor the transition of our founder, Dr. Ernest Holmes, in 1960, and we celebrate the healing and uniting of our movement in 2011-12. "This is a valuable resource and an essential read for anyone who has been touched by this profound teaching." — Rev. Kathy Mastroianni Executive Director, Science of Mind Archives and Library Foundation This latest volume of Chronicles of Religious Science embodies the spirit of our founder, Dr. Ernest Holmes’, statement that Religious Science should always remain “open at the top.” It opens the reader to the unfolding story of this amazing movement. In so doing, it is a valuable resource to every practitioner of the Science of Mind. "Dr. Marilyn Leo has a way of answering the questions of the curious in this, her latest contribution to Religious Science. Enjoy your journey through the annals of one of the major contributors to the Science of Mind." — Rev. Stephen Rambo, Spiritual Leader, CSL Simi Valley "Ernest Holmes writes, “When, through intuition, faith finds its proper place under Divine Law, there are no limitations, and what are called miraculous results follow.” The Chronicles of Religious Science II is one of those miraculous efforts. I offer deep gratitude to Marilyn Leo for capturing the essence and details of so many aspects of the life of Holmes and the Religious Science movement and honor the keen minds and huge hearts who worked tirelessly to bring it to you. Holmes also writes, “A thought of love is always healing.” May this work be a loving support to you on your spiritual path. The journey continues." — Rev. David Goldberg, Ph.D. Past Publisher and Editor, Science of Mind Magazine, Science of Mind Publishing
