Initiates a wider development of inquiries into women's literary cultures to move the reader beyond single geographical, linguistic, cultural and period boundaries. Since the closing decades of the twentieth century, medieval women's writing has been the subject of energetic conversation and debate. This interest, however, has focused predominantly on western European writers working within the Christian tradition: the Saxon visionaries, Mechthild of Hackeborn, Mechthild of Magdeburg, Gertrude the Great, for example, and, in England, Julian of Norwich and Margery Kempe are cases in point. While this present book acknowledges the huge importance of such writers to women's literary history, it also argues that they should no longer be read solely within a local context. Instead, by putting them into conversation with other literary women and their cultures from wider geographical regions and global cultures - women from eastern Europe and their books, dramas and music; the Welsh gwraig llwyn a pherth (woman of bush and brake); the Indian mystic, Mirabai; Japanese women writers from the Heian period; women saints from across Christian Europe and those of eleventh-century Islam or late medieval Ethiopia; for instance - much more is to be gained in terms of our understanding of the drivers behind and expressions of medieval women's literary activities in far broader contexts. This volume considers the dialogue, synergies, contracts and resonances emerging from such new alignments, and to help a wider, multidirectional development of this enquiry into women's literary cultures.

Mirabai written by Nancy M. Martin and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-07-24 with History categories.

Mirabai, an iconic sixteenth-century Indian poet-saint, is renowned for her unwavering love of God, her disregard for social hierarchies and gendered notions of honor and shame, and her challenge to familial, feudal, and religious authorities. Defying attempts to constrain and even kill her, she could not be silenced. Though verifiable facts regarding her life are few, her fame spread across social, linguistic, and religious boundaries, and stories about her multiplied across the subcontinent and the centuries. In Mirabai, Nancy M. Martin traces the story of this immensely popular Indian saint from the earliest manuscript references to her through colonial and nationalist developments to scholarly and popular portrayals in the decades leading up to Indian independence. This book examines Mirabai's place as both insider and outsider to the developing strands of devotional Hinduism and her role in contested terrain of debates around the education and independence of women and the crafting of Indian and Hindu identities. Mirabai offers a comprehensive and multi-layered portrait of this remarkable and still controversial woman, who continues to be a source of inspiration and catalyst for self-actualization for spiritual seekers, artists, activists, and so many others in India and around the world today.

Boundaries Of The Self written by Debalina Banerjee and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-06-02 with Social Science categories.

This book addresses the intersections between gender and identity by critically examining female spaces. It has famously been argued that men and women are made in culture. As such, this volume explores how spaces—social, political, cultural, historical, and even cyber—affect the creative, personal, urban and global identities of women. The scholarly approaches of the contributors here probe into these spaces and analyze the problematic of gender identities as they are constructed, reconstructed or deconstructed through processes of appropriation, subversion and signification. The functional politics of patriarchy influences a range of networks that include social, cultural, political, and religious archetypes. This book will open new vistas in women’s studies through dialogues and discussions on the various facets of “Space”, and how in turn they generate the rhetoric of agency and power or again how they annihilate attempts at emancipation and empowerment. Furthermore, the book explores the diversity of women’s experiences and their contributions across cultures, and examines knowledge and practices in the light of gender differences, suggesting new ways to “conceptualize the relations between the self and the ever changing global communities”. Its interdisciplinary nature, drawing on the humanities, arts, social sciences will give it a wide readership among students, teachers and researchers. In addition, since women’s studies is one of the most sought-after academic disciplines of the contemporary academic world, this book will generate interest and contribute to the dynamic nature of women’s studies research.
