Milton Nieuwsma explains why he wrote Miracle on Chestnut Street and reflects on Thomas Jefferson, the man and his legacy: So why did you write this book? "For a couple of reasons. One was to tell the story of the Declaration of Independence from Jefferson's point of view and in real time. The other reason was to restore his rightful place in history." Why do you say that? "Well, he's had a pretty rough go of it the past few decades, first because of DNA and then because of the 1619 Project." What do you think is Jefferson's biggest legacy? "More than anyone, he defined the idea of America, the idea that individual freedom is basic to our way of life. He was our country's first human rights champion. Even with all of our problems today, our country is still a beacon of hope and freedom to people around the world. We owe that mainly to Jefferson." Tom Jefferson, a young plantation owner from Virginia, was the least likely member of the Second Continental Congress to make a name for himself. When he arrived in Philadelphia in 1775 it was by defau Yet we associate Jefferson's name more than any other with what happened on the most important day in American history: July 4, 1776. Notwithstanding many other defining moments in our nation's past-Appomattox, Pearl Harbor, the Apollo moon landing, 9/11 to name a few-the Declaration of Independence that Jefferson wrote and the Continental Congress adopted on that date symbolizes more than any other event what America stands for as a nation. Now, for the first time, the story of that historic event is told from Jefferson's point-of-view. Drawing from his letters, journals, diaries and other sources, as well as from on-site research at Monticello (Jefferson's home in Virginia), Colonial Williamsburg and Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia, two-time Emmy-wining writer Milton Nieuwsma recreates the sixteen most important months in Jefferson's life, from his election to the Continental Congress to the Declaration of Independence. Miracle on Chestnut Street is not only an inside account of how a piece of paper came to define the American republic; it's the story of how a young man entered the world stage through the back door-and how the ideas he expressed in that document still resonate in the 21st century.

The Life And Death Of Mahatma Gandhi written by Robert Payne and has been published by Brick Tower Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-06-06 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

This is the heroic story of the man whose non-violent movement transformed his native India both spiritually and politically as it impelled the nation along the road to independence. With consummate skill, in a narration that never flags in vividness and drama, Robert Payne re-creates Mahatma Gandhi both as a spiritual and historical force and as a living personality. When in January, l948, Gandhi was assassinated in Delhi by a fanatic, his death sent shock waves around the world. For two generations he had been the conscience of his country and the world. Planting the idea of non-violence firmly in men’s minds, he had not only conquered India but also changed the landscape of the human heart. In the tradition of his best-selling biographies of Lenin and Schweitzer, Robert Payne’s life brings Gandhi alive as a rounded personality. Beginning with the moving story of a shy, awkward boy from a provincial Indian city who married at Thirteen, then was separated from his bride for years while he read law in London, the book describes Gandhi’s life as a successful barrister in South Africa who turned his back on wealth to defend Indian settlers against discrimination and persecution. Robert Payne superbly describes Gandhi’s daring marches to aid the oppressed; his fasts and imprisonments; his historic achievements at international congresses and conferences in India and England where, clad only in shawl and loincloth, he met with prime ministers and viceroys and won their respect as he fought for the dignity and freedom of his people. “I would place Robert Payne’s book on the level of a great novel by Tolstoy, swiftly moving, panoramic, writ on the canvas of destiny and of close historical characterization,” writes Dr. Amiya Chakravarty, former private secretary of Rabindranath Tagore, who knew Gandhi personally and worked with him. “It is one of the great biographies. No finer account of Gandhi’s life and death has been written.”

The Triumph Of The Fungi written by Nicholas P. Money and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-08-31 with Science categories.

This book is concerned with the most devastating fungal diseases in history. These are the plagues of trees and crop plants, caused by invisible spores that have reshaped entire landscapes and decimated human populations. The Triumph of the Fungi focuses on the fascinating biology of the well- and lesser-known diseases, and also tells the stories of the scientists involved in their study, and of the people directly impacted by the loss of forest trees like the chestnut, and cash crops such as coffee and cacao. In a surprisingly brief time, human knowledge of the fungi that infect plants has evolved from Biblical superstition, to the recognition of the true nature of plant disease, and, more recently, to a sense of awe for the sophistication of these microbes. The crucial issue of human culpability in these fungal epidemics is addressed in the books closing chapter.

In A Time To Live, Robert Raines explores the spiritual and emotional dimensions of what can be the most rewarding time of life. Drawing on his experiences as an ordained minister and as director of a non-denominational retreat center focusing on issues of personal growth, Raines delineates the important passages we must all make from our middle years in the process of growing older. In an approach that is both meditative and inspirational, drawing from a variety of backgrounds, anecdotes, and literature, Raines provides a new perspective on the aging process and its implications. To make the most of this ultimate period of life, he argues, we must each confront certain issues: waking up to mortality, embracing sorrow, savoring blessedness, re-imagining work, nurturing intimacy, seeking forgiveness, and taking on the mysterious process of exploring what is yet to be done in life with a sense of possibility and hope. For the millions of baby boomers just entering their fifties and others approaching their sixties who are determined to be aware and take advantage of the challenges they face, A Time To Live, is the only book to directly address their needs. Sure to be a welcome and important spiritual guide for many, it offers the possibility of fulfillment and personal satisfaction.

Leanne Strong hates June eighth even though it’s supposed to a day for celebration. Fifteen years ago on that date, baby Leanne was purported to be miraculously healed of a spinal cord defect after her mother prayed to a religious mystic who was later elevated to sainthood. Since Leanne’s unexplained cure, thousands of people gather in her small town every year to celebrate her miracle—a miracle she doesn't remember but still accepts as real—most of the time. When teen pitching phenom Braeden Dalisay moves into the house across the street from Leanne, he harbors a chip on his shoulder even larger than his athletic talent. Forced to spend the summer in the same law office, he and Leanne carry on a working relationship that vacillates between stormy and silent. After Leanne finds out that Braeden’s sister, Emeline, recently passed away, the reason for his behavior becomes clear. Emeline Dalisay was a girl who didn’t get a miracle. Time softens Braeden’s anger, and he and Leanne eventually draw closer. But when he and his family are hit with another traumatic event, he pulls away, the unfairness of life a deep wound. Leanne wants to help Braeden and his family heal as much as she wants a relationship with him. More than that, she wants a miracle for Braeden.
