Precisely rendered to dazzle the eye with their botanical accuracy, the sumptuous arrays of fruit and flowers by Dutch painter Jan van Huysum (1682-1749) were among the most avidly collected paintings of the eighteenth century. The arrangements were painstakingly executed over many months and commanded exceptionally high prices from admirers throughout Europe. This delightful book explores two of Van Huysum's most important still-life paintings, "Vase of Flowers "and" Fruit Piece," both in the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum. Executed in 1722, they are among the first works to feature the innovations Van Huysum introduced to a beloved Dutch tradition. Like his seventeenth-century predecessors, Van Huysum combined flowers and fruits that flourished at different times of the year into a single bouquet. He worked directly from nature rather than from sketchbooks and animated the arrangements with crawling insects and butterflies. His inimitable technique resulted in an illusionism that continues to captivate us today. The book's sumptuous plates reveal the artist's highly nuanced palette, and his exuberant, asymmetrical arrangements reflect emerging rococo rhythms.

The Meanest Flower written by Mimi Khalvati and has been published by Carcanet this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-08-01 with Poetry categories.

Wordsworth's 'meanest flower that blows' suggested to him 'thoughts that do often lie too deep for tears'. The lyrics, elegies, songs and ghazals in Mimi Khalvati's book pay attention to things the imagination generally disregards, an attention that is concentrated, intense and unapologetically Romantic. Hers is the true voice of feeling, undeflected by irony or self-deprecation. There is rapture in these poems as well as a tragic sense: nature, childhood, motherhood and family relationships all have a double valency, a give and take, to which Khalvati witnesses with a feeling sharpened by love and grief.

Child: New and Selected Poems 1991-2011 combines a generous collation of poems from Mimi Khalvati's five Carcanet volumes with previously uncollected sequences. She orders her work autobiographically, telling the stories of her life in four sections: childhood and early adulthood; motherhood; meditations on light; and love and art, circling back to childhood in her celebrated final sequence (The Meanest Flower'). The figure of the child stands at the centre of the book, appearing in many guises: the poet as a schoolgirl on the Isle of Wight, or in half-remembered later years living with her grandmother in Tehran; her two children, now grown up; children in art; and an enduring sense of oneself as a child that is never left behind. Here is the essential Khalvati: exquisitely nuanced, formally accomplished, Romantic in sensibility; rapturous and tender in response to nature, family and love. Her poems, David Constantine writes, 'say what it feels like being human, the good and the ill of it, with passion, tact and lightness.'

The aim of this monograph is to outline the symbolism, practical use and contextual meaning of the terms, metaphors and names from the field of natural sciences in the art of Otokar Březina. The present volume of nine studies written between 2003 and 2013 (O. Březina’s Galium, Ear of Grain in the Work of Otokar Březina, Vitis vinifera L. ssp. sativa /DC./ Hegi in the Works of Otokar Březina, Trees in the Poetic Works of Otokar Březina, Flora in the Work of Otokar Březina, Flowers in the Work of Otokar Březina, Otokar Březina’s “Geographical” Geology?, Březina’s Stones and Gemstones, Březina’s Stones and Gemstones II) is devoted to selected problems concerning the images, metaphors and generally the use of terminology from natural sciences in the poems, essays and correspondence of the prominent poet of Czech and European symbolism, Otokar Březina (1868–1929). The surprisingly frequently and skilfully used terminology from the sphere of natural sciences is an irreplaceable component part of the poet’s work and is perceived as its integral part both by the readers’ and specialists’ public. The aim of the book Nature in Otokar Březina’s Work is to mediate Březina’s work to foreign readers and at the same time to propagate the constantly good name of Czech literature beyond the geopolitical, geographical and language sphere of exclusively Czech milieu
