The story of Massah-Meribah is a pluriform tradition within the Hebrew Bible. Part One of this book uses redaction analysis to assess diachronically the six reminiscences of this tradition within Deuteronomy (Deut 6:16; 8:15; 9:22; 32:13, 52; 33:8). The relative chronological relationship of these texts, and the tradition components they preserve, reveals a framework of five formative stages of this story's tradition-history from the perspective of the tradents responsible for the production of Deuteronomy. Part Two is a redactional study of the tradition's narratives in Exod 17:1-7 and Num 20:1-13. Special attention is devoted to the texts that anchor the Massah-Meribah narratives into the Pentateuch. In the end, Part Two not only corroborates the framework detected in Deuteronomy for the formative stages of the Massah-Meribah tradition, but it also carries broad implications for the formation of the Pentateuch in general and the Wilderness Narrative in particular.

Mirages have long astonished travelers of the sea and beguiled thirsty desert voyagers. Traditional Chinese and Japanese poetry and art depict the above-horizon, superior mirage, or fata morgana, as exhalations of clam-monsters. Indian sources relate mirages to the “thirst of gazelles,” a metaphor for the futility of desire. Starting in the late eighteenth century, mirages became a symbol in the West of Oriental despotism—a negative, but also enchanted, emblem. But the mirage motif is rarely simply condemnatory. More often, our obsession with mirages conveys a sense of escape, of fascination, of a desire to be deceived. The Waterless Sea is the first book devoted to the theories and history of mirages. Christopher Pinney navigates a sinuous pathway through a mysterious and evanescent terrain, showing how mirages have impacted politics, culture, science, and religion—and how we can continue to learn from their sublimity.

Mopokes and Mirages — both part of the great Australian Folklore, but neither having much substance. No such bird as a mopoke (see the Introduction to this book)and a bit hard to get your hand or mind around a mirage. Mopokes and Mirages is Rex Ellis’ eighth book, but unlike the title it is full of substance. Once started it is like taking the lid off a Pandora’s box – the stories (all true) and accounts that spill out are as varied as he rich landscapes and wildlife of the Australian continent itself. No subject is sacred to this South Australian Bushie – from how he acquired the iconic Birdsville Pub, to how he acquired’ or yarded up his wife Patti. More of his company’s great desert camel expeditions, his legendary inland boat safaris to Lake Eyre and other places, and a long chapter on four wheel drive vehicles he has owned over his forty five years as an outback guide. There are his regular chapters Bureaucracy and the Shinybum Brigade, and Along the rocky road of life! Throughout, his love and knowledge of this country, flora and fauna, particularly birds, is evident, as is his obvious concern for the health of the Australian environment. Last but not least is his great passion for his paddle wheeler, the sixty foot sternwheeler Dromedary. Of particular interest is his ongoing journey up the Darling River, getting the Dromedary to places where no large vessel has been for nearly a hundred years. A great read for lovers of the Land of Oz.

Desert written by Roslynn D. Haynes and has been published by Reaktion Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-15 with Nature categories.

Sand. Cacti. Lizards. Mirages. Deserts call to mind exotic places, a sense of adventure and freedom, but also thirst and desolation. In Desert, Roslynn D. Haynes takes a fresh look at this geographical feature and cultural entity as it becomes an increasingly threatened environment. Considering the immense geographical diversity of deserts from the Sahara to Antarctica, Haynes explores the intriguing and often bizarre ways plants and animals adapt to such a hostile environment, as well as the diverse peoples that have inhabited deserts and evolved unique lifestyles and cultures in response to their surroundings. She asks why Judaism, Christianity, and Islam all originated in the deserts of the Middle East and traces the connections between the minimalism of desert existence and the pursuit of a spiritual dimension. Finally, she describes the allure deserts have exerted on the West, the significance of desolate landscapes in literature and film, and the revolution in artists’ responses to the desert as an empty space and as an inspiration for new visual techniques with which to view it. Ending with a look at how commercial and military interests threaten desert ecologies, Desert casts new light on our view of these seemingly barren places.
