'Reveals an until-now hidden history of women's self-portraiture. A gift that keeps on giving' ALI SMITH, NEW STATESMAN, Books of the Year 'A fascinating survey . . . Extraordinary' DAILY MAIL 'A bewitching, invigorating history' OLIVIA LAING 'Grips from the opening pages' FINANCIAL TIMES 'Important and brilliantly accessible' VOGUE Until the twentieth century, art history was, in the main, written by white men who tended to write about other white men. The idea that women in the West have always made art was rarely cited as a possibility. Yet they have - and, of course, continue to do so - often against tremendous odds, from laws and religion to the pressures of family and public disapproval. In THE MIRROR AND THE PALETTE, Jennifer Higgie introduces us to a cross-section of women artists who embody the fact that there is more than one way to understand our planet, more than one way to live in it and more than one way to make art about it. Spanning 500 years, biography and cultural history intertwine in a narrative packed with tales of rebellion, adventure, revolution, travel and tragedy enacted by women who turned their back on convention and lived lives of great resilience, creativity and bravery. This is a dazzlingly original and ambitious book by one of the most well-respected art critics at work today.

The Zurich Congress marked a return to the origins of Analytical Psychology: here it was that C.G. Jung lived for the first six decades of this century and developed the school of psychology he came to be known for. Here, too, is where many of today's Jungian analysts from all over the world received their training, and their initiation into the profession. As this collection of the complete proceedings attests, the theme of open questions drew a bountiful array of intriguing responses, and this to the largest gathering of Jungian analysts ever: more than 800 in all.

A Man Of Little Faith written by Michel Deguy and has been published by SUNY Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-11-19 with Philosophy categories.
A poetic and philosophical negotiation of the alternatives of atheism and religious faith. In A Man of Little Faith the French poet and philosopher Michel Deguy reflects on the loss of religious faith both personally and culturally. Disenchanted not only with the oversimplifications of radical atheism but also with what he sees as an insipid sacralization of art as the influence of religion has waned, Deguy refuses to focus on loss or impossibility. Instead he actively suspends belief, producing a poetic deconstruction that, though resolutely a-theistic, makes a plea for an earthly piety and for the preservation of the relics of religion for the world to come. Two essays by Jean-Luc Nancy and a recent interview with Deguy are included, which reveal the impact and implications of Deguys ongoing reflection and its significance within his generation of French thought.

In Poe S Wake written by Jonathan Elmer and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-06-05 with Literary Criticism categories.
"Edgar Allan Poe is one of American culture's most iconic figures, inspiring countless derivations beyond the literary realm, from commercial illustration and kitch to art installations and video games. Why has Poe been so hugely influential in media other than his own? What do filmmakers, composers, and other artists find in Poe that suits their purposes so often and so variously? Poe's works are violent and brooding, memorable both for certain grisly images and for certain prevailing moods-dread, creepiness, mournfulness. They are, in other words, distinctly graphic and richly atmospheric. Jonathan Elmer locates the source of Poe's fascination for artists in these two vernacular aesthetic categories-the graphic and the atmospheric-and how well they describe our experience of the multi-media world. Elmer uses Poe to explore these two terms and track some deep patterns in their use, not through theoretical labor but through close encounters with a wide sampling of aesthetic objects that avail themselves of Poe's work. Poe, we learn, has come to exemplify a modern method of aesthetic production. It is as if he left his box of tools lying around for others to pick up and play with. The bundle of Poe traits-his thematic emphasis on extreme sensation, his flexible sense of form, his experimental and modular method, his iconic personal profile-amount to what could be called a Poe "brand," one as likely to be found in music videos or comics as in novels and stories. Ranging from René Magritte and Claude Debussy to Lou Reed, Roger Corman, and Spongebob Squarepants, Elmer shows how the Poe brand opens trunk lines to aesthetic experiences fundamental to a multi-media world"--

This book in Tagore studies offers a fresh analysis of Tagorean thought by working through the philosophy and poetics of plasticity. As a prominent figure in plastic theory,Ghoshexplores Tagore''s views on education, identity politics, environment, and literature through what he calls the 'plastic principle'. This deconstructs Tagore''s thinking on''sahitya'', ecosophy, historicity and philosophy of history, and aesthetic education and the notion of the political. Not a standard intellectual biography or historical study, this book radicalizes how we think and interpret Tagore to arrive at whatGhoshcalls Plastic Tagore. The book, thus, thinksafter yesterday.
