As Agam, the young protagonist, listens with a mixture of awe and trepidation, the villagers' narratives come alive, transporting him into a world where legends blend with the whispers of the night breeze. Agam's journey leads him to unravel the enigmatic birth of the Mibu, a divine class with foresight and insight, paralleling the oracles of ancient mythologies. But it's not just the supernatural that binds this community. The moonlit nights hold a profound significance, a time when villagers find solace under starlit skies while legends and tales echo through the air. Even amid their daily toils, the marshy ponds and swampy bogs are sources of wonder and fear, where the lines between reality and the Malevolent Uyyu's shadowy presence blur. "Beliefs Across the River" is a spellbinding tapestry woven with echoes of Greek and English literature, where age-old tales of Baak, Dhanguli, and beyond speak to the heart of human curiosity. As Agam's world oscillates between belief and scepticism, reality and enchantment, readers are invited to explore a universe where folklore dances with the unseen and where the river current carries with it the echo of legends and the whispers of the Mishing people's souls.

Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Excerpt from English Fairy and Other Folk Tales The following collection of English Folk Tales docs not pretend to be more than a presentation, in a more or less literary form, of a few of the traditional stories, formerly no doubt rife in this country, but now fast disappearing under the stress of modem life. The reader will of course miss many of those with which he has always been familiar - many for which the term Fairy Tale has always seemed to him to have a special connotation. One of the reasons for this is that several of such tales are not of true native growth, but were introduced from France by means of the chap-book translations to which I shall have occasion to refer presently. Another reason is to be found in the complaint recently made by a distinguished writer that a good version of his old favourite, Jack the Giant-Killer, was hard to procure. I have indeed ventured to include a version of this particular tale, though it can by no means be denied that time and circumstances have dealt hardly with it, as with many like it. Excerpt from Folk Tales Every Child Should Know: A Selection of the Popular Traditions of Various Nations for Young People When the traveller looks at Rome for the first time he does not realize that there have been several cities on the same piece of ground, and that the churches and palaces and other great buildings he sees to-day rest on an earlier and invisible city buried in dust beneath the foundations of the Rome of the Twentieth Century. In like manner, and because all visible things on the surface of the earth have grown out of older things which have ceased to be, the world of habits, the ideas, customs, fancies, and arts, in which we live is a survival of a younger world which long ago disappeared. When we speak of Friday as an unlucky day, or touch wood after saying that we have had good luck for a long time, or take the trouble to look at the new moon over the right Shoulder, or avoid crossing the street while a funeral is passing, we are recall ing old superstitions or beliefs, a vanished world in which our remote forefathers lived.
