Although canons pervade music of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, they have not received proportionate attention in the musicological literature. The contributions in this book shed light on canons and canonic techniques from a wide range of perspectives, such as music theory and analysis, compositional and performance practice, palaeography and notation, as well as listening expectations and strategies. Especially in the case of riddle canons, insights from other disciplines such as literature, theology, iconography, emblematics, and philosophy have proved crucial for a better understanding and interpretation of how such pieces were created. The essays extend from the early period of canonic writing to the seventeenth century, ending with three contributions concerned with the reception history of medieval and Renaissance canons in music and writings on music from the Age of Enlightenment to the present. This book was awarded the Special Citation by the Society for Music Theory in November 2008.

English summary: Integrating texts of homage for secular rulers in sacral mass settings may at first sight seem to be a contradiction. In actual fact, however, the mass - the most liturgical of all genres - was particularly attractive to Renaissance composers as a form of paying homage to a ruler. This study is the first to present a systematic examination of masses for secular rulers from their beginning in around 1500 (Josquin Desprez' "Missa Hercules Dux Ferraria") to the mid-17th century. It analyses and correlates the historical contexts, compositorial style and symbolism of masses from Italy, Spain, Portugal and the House of Habsburg. The outstanding feature of masses for secular rulers is their instrumentalisation as demonstrations of political power using the liturgical mass as a medium. In masses for secular rulers the sacral aspect of the renaissance ruler are brought to a culmination, sonorously symbolising, as it were, the divine legitimation of their rule.

First study of Juan Esquivel, a highly significant figure in Spanish musical life in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Juan Esquivel was a cathedral choirmaster and composer, active in Spain during the period c.1580-c .1623 in which all aspects of the arts flourished, and one of the few peninsular composers of his generation to see his works published. He is known to have produced three large volumes of sacred polyphony - masses, motets, hymns, psalms, magnificats, and Marian antiphons - under the titles Liber primus missarum, Motecta festorum([both published 1608)and Tomus secondus, psalmorum, hymnorum... et missarum (published 1613); they reveal him to be a highly skilled craftsman. This first full-length study of his life and works presents a critical assessment of the man and his music, setting him within the social and religious context of the so-called Counter-Reformation. Beginning by outlining the facts of his life, the book goes on to offer an analysis and assessment of his output. Clive Walkley was until his retirement a lecturer in music and music education at Lancaster University.
