The extraordinary story of the band of maverick missileers and the first combat downing of the STEALTH aircraft in history. All they have is less than 30 seconds to acquire the target, engage it and bring it down. Everything longer than that short time frame means possibility of their own destruction. What was their "tool of trade"? The obsolete missile system...a slingshot to fight most modern aircraft of the mightiest military alliance in the world...And they used that slingshot to bring down those aircraft. They were targeted many times, attacked with the missiles and packs of SAM hunter-killers but they withstood and survived to fight another day...and to win their own battles. This is the story about them...The story of the band of maverick missileers and the first combat downing of the STEALTH aircraft in history as seen through the eyes of someone who was there...but this is also the story of their opponents as well...and the story about the technologies - radars, stealth, missile guidance, SA-3 on their collision courses which culminated on March 27, 1999 at the sky over Serbia in the night when the air warfare changed for good... The intention of this book is to describe and enlighten in detail one event that shook, shaped and steered the aviation twenty years ago. That event happened when something that was marvel in aviation been brought down with something that was, at the time of use, almost obsolete. This book took the approach firstly through the eyes of missile crew than through the eyes of pilot in the last war of 20th century where one small, independent country, in the middle of Europe, was brutally attacked by mighty alliance for the sake of political reasons that are very controversial. But this event was not just the end of experiment, rather the beginning. Definitely, in the future stealth and missile will meet many more times in the sky over some other countries. Both authors participated in that war in the air defence and intelligence roles. Lt. Col. Anicic, as a missile battalion deputy commander and executive officer, was personally involved in downing F-117A. Because of the necessary requirements of security, both stealth and air defence materials are not widely known and there are a lot of speculations about these events, both in the printed material and also on the web. Some of them are pure imagination and some of them are close to the truth. The real truth is now known to a very narrow circle of experts but even there some the finest details are not known. The intention of the authors was not to write a pure technical book simply because there are plenty of technical publications and manuals about the radars, stealth, missiles, air defence suppression, development programs etc. The intention was also not to just address the historical events, but rather to combine all of that in a story which can tell both professional in their respectful field and also general public how the clash of two technologies culminated in the sky over Serbia and what are the consequences for the technology development and impacts on future of the air warfare. One of the challenges with this type of approach is to objectively expose error without casting the slightest shadow on those who took an oath and fought for their countries. In majority of books about air warfare, there is usually an accent on one side, depends who the author is and for which audience the book is intended. Of course, majority books are related to the pilots - fighter pilots, bombers or "wild weasel" crews. This book took another approach. This edition consist revised and corrected noted errors. This book is smaller format, 6 x 9.

A look at the takedown of the presumably invulnerable aircraft during the Kosovo War, featuring perspectives on both sides, plus technical details. With its futuristic and unmistakable design, the Lockheed F-117A Nighthawk, the so-called “Stealth Fighter,” was the wonder of the age. Virtually undetectable by radar, this ground-attack aircraft could slip unseen through enemy defenses to deliver its deadly payload on unsuspecting targets. Its effectiveness had been well demonstrated during the Gulf War of 1991, during which the F-117A achieved almost legendary status. But, at 20.42 hours on 27 March 1999, the military and aviation worlds were stunned when the impossible happened—a virtually obsolete Soviet-built surface-to-air missile system which had first been developed more than thirty years earlier, detected and shot down an F-117A, callsign “Vega 31.” This incident took place during the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia during the Kosovo War. It was, and remains, at least officially, the only time that a stealth aircraft was detected and shot down by a ground-based missile system. In this book, the authors, both of whom served in the Kosovo War, take the reader through every moment of that astounding event, from both the perspective of Lieutenant Colonel Dani’s 3rd Battalion, 250th Air Defense Missile Brigade, a Yugolsav Army unit, and that of the pilot of the F-117A, Lieutenant Colonel Darrell Patrick Zelko, who ejected and survived the loss of his aircraft. The reader is placed in the cabin of the missile fire control center and alongside “Dale” Zelko in the cockpit of his stealth fighter as each second dramatically unfolds. Stealth characteristics are now regarded as a standard part of modern military aircraft design but with each generation of aircraft becoming increasingly, almost cripplingly, expensive to produce and operate compared with the simpler surface-to-air defense systems, the outcome of the battle between missile and stealth hangs in the balance. That this is the case might be seen in the strange fact that it is claimed that two other F-117As did not return to the U.S. at the end of the Kosovo War, though, mysteriously, their fate has never been revealed. Were they too victims of Yugoslav missiles? Though intended for the general reader, Shooting Down the Stealth Fighter covers the technical details of the weapons involved and their deployment—and the authors should know, as one of them, Djordje Anicic, was a member of the Yugoslav team which brought down Zelko’s aircraft.

"Have Blue and the F-117A: Evolution of the "Stealth Fighter" documents the history, observations, and lessons learned from the development and acquisition of the first very-low-observable combat aircraft. The book is a case study of the high-payoff, low-profile strike fighter development effort (code-named "Have Blue" and "Senior Trend"). In 1991, the aircraft played a key role in the air campaign against Iraq during Operation Desert Storm. The book describes the clear vision, strong leadership and teamwork, rapid-response decision making, and keen focus on achieving an operational capability that marked the project. Also discussed are potential applications of the strategies used in the project to today's acquisition environment.

Radar Man written by Edward Lovick Jr and has been published by iUniverse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

During the 1950s, the United States and the Soviet Union teetered on the brink of nuclear devastation. America's hope for national security relied solely upon aerial reconnaissance. Radar Man is the fascinating memoir of a physicist who, with his colleagues, developed the stealth technology that eventually created radar-invisible aircraft. Edward Lovick shares a compelling story from the perspective of an enthusiastic scientist that highlights his pioneering experiences in an innovative, secret world as he helped create stealth aircraft such as the A-12 OXCART, SR-71 Blackbird, and F-117 Nighthawk. From the moment in 1957 when Lockheed's famous aircraft designer Clarence L. 'Kelly' Johnson invited Lovick to join his "Skunk Works," Lovick details how he helped the CIA eventually perform vital, covert reconnaissance flights over Soviet-held territory during the Cold War, saved Lockheed ADP's A-12 from cancellation, and provided key design input to the SR-71 and F-117. Lovick's autobiography describing his career as an engineering physicist in the Skunk Works not only draws attention to the insurmountable challenges that accompanied the task of developing radar-invisible aircraft, but also the importance of the monumental task these young scientists fulfilled-all with the hope of creating a secure future for their beloved country.

In less than a century the submarine has matched or overtaken in military significance the battleship, the aircraft carrier, the strategic bomber, even the land-based missile in its silo. Dan van der Vat tells how the submersible man-of-war progressed from being a gleam in the eye of Fenian Irishmen intent on damaging the British Navy to becoming the most intricate technological system devised by man. Most important and fascinating of all are his accounts of the development of submarine strategy during the epochal naval campaigns of the twentieth century.

This unclassified account of the 37th Tactical Fighter Wing's accomplishments during Operations DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM was prepared to permit members of the "Team Stealth" community to reflect with pride on their contribution to sustained world peace. They proved their mettle in battle and have earned the title of American warrior. It is a testament to their love for country and their willingness to sacrifice for the ideals they defend every day of their lives. The peoples of the United States and the entire Free World are forever in their debt. Nighthawks Over Iraq is based entirely on the contingency historical reports developed by SMSgt Phil Myers during his visit to Saudi Arabia as historian of the 37th Tactical Fighter Wing and the mission tally sheets developed by the wing's operations network. The proof of the pudding for stealth technology came during the F-117A's second combat employment, On 19 August 1990, the 37 TFW deployed to Saudi Arabia for Operation DESERT SHIELD- That deployment transformed into Operation DE5ERT STORM1s combat operations against Iraq from 16 January to 28 February 1991. Operation DESERT STORM featured the F-117A in its first real-world test against a modern, integrated air defense. The "Nighthawks" of the 37 TFW repeatedly flew into and through intense anti-aircraft artillery and surface-to-air missile fire, accurately employing 2,000 tons of precision-guided munitions during 1,300 combat sorties. Wing pilots scored 1,600 direct hits against enemy targets in nearly 400 locations. without suffering a single loss, or experiencing any damage, they destroyed hardened command and control bunkers, aircraft shelters, production and storage facilities for nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons, and other heavily defended targets of the highest military and political significance. Employing just 2-5 percent of the USAF assets in theater, the 37th not only led the U.N. coalition force against Iraq, but also hit nearly 40 percent of the Iraqi targets that came under fire in the first three days. Twenty-nine stealth fighters hit 26 high value targets on the first night alone- the F-117As were so effective that the Iraqi air defense system practically collapsed. Iraq's command, control, and communications network never recovered.

During the final years of the 20th century, the most significant break-through in military weaponry was the concept of Stealth technology, and the first mass-produced weapon to utilize this to perfection was the F-117 Nighthawk. Originally delivered in 1982, its existence was officially denied until the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, when it entered the public spotlight over the skies of Baghdad. Illustrated with stunning color photographs of the F-117 above Iraq, and complemented by numerous personal accounts from the pilots themselves, this book explores the history and combat experience of one of the most secretive planes ever built.
