The last forty years of research have cast new light on the lives of ancient Mediterranean women in the penumbra of our patriarchal sources, including the pervasive risks they faced in becoming mothers. Current demographic models suggest that perhaps as many as one in five children would have lost their mothers by age ten. The inescapable conclusion is that the absence of ancient mothers is not merely an artifact of bias in our sources, but also a fundamental condition of antiquity, with profound implications for ancient family life and the experience of childhood. Missing Mothers: Maternal Absence in Antiquity is the first volume dedicated to studying mother absence as an integrated phenomenon in the ancient Mediterranean, from its obvious manifestation as total absence in the wake of maternal death, to the partial absences of maternal separation brought about by economic necessity, divorce, slavery, social conventions, and occasionally choice. The fifteen essays collected here explore the gaps left by absent mothers and how individuals, families, and societies in the ancient Mediterranean conceptualized, represented, and responded to those gaps, practically, psychologically, artistically, and politically between the 5th century BCE and late antiquity.

Missing, dead, disappeared, or otherwise absent mothers haunt us and the stories we tell ourselves. Our literature, from fairytales like Cinderella and The Little Mermaid to popular narratives like Cheryl Strayed's recent book Wild, is peopled with motherless children. The absent mother, whether in literature or life, may force us to forge an independent identity. But she can also leave a mother-shaped hole and a howling loneliness that dogs us through our adult lives. This anthology explores the theme of absent mothers from scholars and creative writers, who tell personal stories and provide the theoretical framework to recognize and begin to understand the impact of motherlessness that ripples through our cultures and our art.

A Missing Mother written by Joy Coutts and has been published by Stories of Childhood Loss and this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-15 with Fiction categories.

This is the first novel in a series that explores Stories of Childhood Loss and Hope. It sends a message out to anyone who has experienced the emotional pain of childhood loss that you are not alone in your grief. The fictional story of little Marianne Bouchard set in 1942/43 through 2000 sees events through her eyes of growing up and then her grown up life - all experienced without her mother. Intertwined with this is Valérie's wartime story, her missing mother. It reveals the experiences of a woman's role within the Women's Auxiliary Air Force or WAAF and Special Operations Executive during World War II. A life that her daughter discovers the previously unknown and uplifting truth about 57 years later. Was Valérie really who she thought she was? What secrets about the War had her grandmother Winnie kept hidden? From her dining room table, Marianne begins an investigation linking events and clues, then embarks on a journey of discovery to find the missing mother she never knew. The backdrop of Valérie's wartime story tells of the bravery and courage of the women agents who served in the Special Operations Executive. In fighting for freedom and peace from the Nazi regime, many of them never returned to their homes and families. These women played their amazing - if unbelievably true - part in defeating the tyranny in 1940's Europe. The story of the female SOE operatives is as fascinating as it is harrowing. They were ordinary women - wives, sisters, daughters, mothers. The sad and disturbing element of this is the fact that the real, detailed story of most of these women did not receive the public or authorities' recognition of their commitment and bravery until many years later. The author pays homage to these brave souls and their contribution to peace and freedom.

The Absent Mother In The Cultural Imagination written by Berit Åström and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-11 with Social Science categories.

This anthology explores the recurring trope of the dead or absent mother in Western cultural productions. Across historical periods and genres, this dialogue has been employed to articulate and debate questions of politics and religion, social and cultural change as well as issues of power and authority within the family. Åström seeks to investigate the many functions and meanings of the dialogue by covering extensive material from the 1200s to 2014 including hagiography, romances, folktales, plays, novels, children’s literature and graphic novels, as well as film and television. This is achieved by looking at the discourse both as products of the time and culture that produced the various narratives, and as part of an on-going cultural conversation that spans the centuries, resulting in an innovative text that will be of great interest to all scholars of gender, feminist and media studies.

An insatiable need for sex and love. Periods of overeating or starving. A pattern of unstable and painful relationships. Does this sound painfully familiar? Trauma counselor Kelly McDaniel has seen these traits over and over in clients who feel trapped in cycles of harmful behaviors-and are unable to stop. Many of us find ourselves stuck in unhealthy habits simply because we don't see a better way. With Mother Hunger, McDaniel helps women break the cycle of destructive behavior by taking a fresh look at childhood trauma and its lasting impact. In doing so, she destigmatizes the shame that comes with being under-mothered and misdiagnosed. McDaniel offers a healing path with powerful tools that include therapeutic interventions and lifestyle changes in service to healthy relationships. The constant search for mother love can be a lifelong emotional burden, but healing begins with knowing and naming what we are missing. McDaniel is the first clinician to identify Mother Hunger, which demystifies the search for love and provides the compass that each woman needs to end the struggle with achy, lonely emptiness, and come home to herself.

This collection explores the concept of the Missing Mother from two inter-related standpoints: the mother as absent in society and the mother as absent in a woman's selfhood. The first perspective considers why and how the mother/mothering is disregarded, discounted, or dismissed in art, literature, culture, policy, and law while the second perspective explores why and how a woman has marginalized, lost, forgotten, forfeited, or abandoned her individual maternal identity. Whether it is society that erases the maternal or a woman who forsakes it, the aim of this collection is to consider the why, how, what, who, and where of the mechanics of missing mother in both society and self. This collection considers reasons for this disavowal and disappearance of the maternal and shows how mothers can and do resist to recover and reclaim the maternal in society and self. Overall, this collection seeks to uncover and reveal the mother so marginalized and maligned in and by patriarchal culture and to show how women may find the missing mother in society and self and achieve empowerment in doing so.
