Every year, more than 600,000 people are reported missing, and hundreds of human remains go unidentified. Two primary federal databases supported by the Department of Justice (DOJ) -- the FBI's National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) -- contain data related to missing and unidentified persons to help solve these cases. NCIC contains criminal justice information accessed by authorized agencies to assist with daily investigations. NamUs information can be used by law enforcement, medical examiners, coroners, and the general public to help with long-term missing and unidentified persons cases. This report describes the access to and use of missing and unidentified persons information contained in NCIC and NamUs, and the extent to which there are opportunities to improve the use of this information. Table and figures. This is a print on demand report.

Missing Persons written by Derek Congram and has been published by Canadian Scholars’ Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-08-01 with Social Science categories.

The work of finding and identifying missing persons is complex and requires the expertise of many people, such as historians hunting through archives, biological anthropologists reconstructing skeletons, and psychologists preparing investigators to interview families of the disappeared. Uniting the voices of 22 experts from around the world, Derek Congram’s collection of original papers centres its attention on those who are engaged in the location, identification, and repatriation of missing persons. The contributors to this timely volume represent multiple disciplines and various fields, including academia, government, and civil service, but are connected by a shared conviction that accounting for the missing is vital for a just society. The chapters concentrate on victims of physical or structural violence, including armed conflict, repressive regimes, criminal behaviour, and racist and colonial policies towards Indigenous persons and minority populations. Some contexts are familiar—morgues, mass graves, and battlefields—while others are surprising, such as schoolyards and a museum in Canada. Although the circumstances of the disappearances vary greatly, Missing Persons illustrates the connections between these disparate contexts. Multidisciplinary in scope, this edited collection is a valuable comparative resource for students, academics, and practitioners in forensic anthropology, anthropological/archaeological ethics, forensic psychology, criminal justice, and human rights.

Without Trace is an informative and heart-stopping read by Barry Cummins, the bestselling author of Missing, back with more cases of Ireland's disappeared — men, women and children who have vanished without trace while going about their normal lives. What happened to two young boys who vanished in Belfast while waiting for a bus in 1974? Where is Trevor Deely, last seen walking in Dublin in December 2000? What happened to Dutch woman Leidy Kaspersma, last seen walking in Co. Kerry on a summer's day in 1978? In Without Trace Barry Cummins profiles these and other cases of people who have vanished across Ireland in the last four decades. He also explores dozens of cases of unidentified bodies which lie in graveyards and morgues from Donegal to Wexford. He examines ongoing efforts to find the bodies of IRA victims buried in secret graves in Monaghan, Meath and Louth, and delves into the cases of people abducted, murdered and secretly buried by Ireland's criminal gangs. And there are many other types of cases in this intriguing book, from a twenty-year campaign by the family of one missing woman to get answers about her case, to the amazing story of one missing Irishman's return 'from the grave' in England. Without Trace: Table of Contents - Predator - IRA Disappeared - Hidden Bodies - Two Boys - Unidentified Bodies - For the Record—Priscilla Clarke - Missing in Kerry - Trevor - Mystery in Mayo - Limerick's Missing Men - Missing from Darndale - Failure to Find Bodies - Stranger than Fiction

When loved-ones go missing, the lives of their family members are turned upside-down. As the days and months turn into years, some families are caged in by their grief, while others become proactive –– renewing police contacts, keeping up with the latest technologies, and educating themselves as they strive to become their long-term missing persons’ advocates. By inspiring hope, as well as providing answers and practical advice, The Long Term Missing: Hope and Help for Families assists families in navigating the uncharted territory they never chose to enter. Author Silvia Pettem also provides families with information to better understand how law-enforcement and related agencies work to solve missing persons cases. Along the way, she takes her readers behind the scenes, while emphasizing that every unidentified person is a missing person to someone else. With real cases, both solved and unsolved, the book also illustrates the resources available and the actions that family members, civilians, and law enforcement agencies can take to search for long-term missing persons, to identify previously unknown remains, and to bring the missing persons home. The Long Term Missing: Hope and Help for Families inspires hope and gives answers as it empowers family members of long term missing persons to be proactive and to become their missing persons’ advocates.

Forensic anthropologists sometimes call themselves "speakers for the dead." They study human remains to help solve crimes, identify missing persons, and discover the identity of unidentified remains. Forensic anthropologists can work with law enforcement and other government agencies. They can also travel around the world to recover and analyze remains. They can work as part of archaeological teams to discover what happened at the site of an ancient battle, help to confirm the identity of a famous person from historical times, or help to identify people who have lost their lives in a plane crash or other disaster. Forensic anthropology began in the early 20th century and continues to evolve today, using DNA analysis and data to reveal the appearance, the identity, and potentially the cause of death of human remains.
