The Socratic method of questioning and refutation (elenchus) predominates the early Platonic dialogues. But things change in the middle dialogues, as Socrates goes beyond merely asking questions and begins to provide answers to his questions. And the method virtually disappears in the late dialogues. The standard explanation of this phenomenon is that the early dialogues were intended to commemorate Socrates and the elenchus, while in the middle and late dialogues Plato went beyond Socrates to present his own mature philosophical thought. In this book, Matthews revises this explanation by uncovering the shortcomings that Plato came to find in the Socratic method and the reasons why Plato lost interest in it.

Peter Hubral sets out a meticulously researched and convincing case that Western Philosophy is founded less upon the original Ancient Greek texts, as on a careless and ahistorical misreading of them, for which he provides an unprecedented rigorous revision. He shows that the original Greek terms astronomía, átomos, kósmos, geometría, idéa, planétes, práxis, psyché, mousiké, sympósion, theoría, and so on have nothing at all to do with astronomy, atom, cosmos, geometry, and so on. The originals terms rather find their equivalents in the Chinese Taiji-practice that he follows since 1997 under the guidance of Dao-Grandmaster Fangfu. He provides abundant evidence that this millennial practice equals the unwritten lost practice of dying (meléte thanátou) about which Plato writes: Those, who happen to grasp the philosophía correctly, risk being unrecognised by others because it is nothing but 'practising to die and to be dead' (Phaidon 64a). This practice - see the front cover - is based on the rigorous implementation of Wuwei, which the Greeks call philía that philosophía refers to, thus giving Greek wisdom (sophía) a completely new meaning. Due matching the Dao-practice to the practice of dying, Hubral completely dismantles the illusion that the western world has constructed about Pythagoras, Socrates, Plato, etc. He shows that they made much more profound discoveries with the practice of dying about nature than what we are told about their contributions to mankind in uncountable commentaries!

It is well known that Socrates was executed by the city of Athens for not believing in the gods and for corrupting the youth. Despite this, it is not widely known what he really thought, or taught the youth to think, about philosophy, the gods, and political affairs. Of the few authors we rely on for firsthand knowledge of Socrates—Aristophanes, Xenophon, Plato, and Aristotle—only Xenophon, the least read of the four, lays out the whole Socratic education in systematic order. In Xenophon's Socratic Education, through a careful reading of Book IV of Xenophon's Memorabilia, Dustin Sebell shows how Socrates ascended, with his students in tow, from opinions about morality or politics and religion to knowledge of such things. Besides revealing what it was that Socrates really thought—about everything from self-knowledge to happiness, natural theology to natural law, and rhetoric to dialectic—Sebell demonstrates how Socrates taught promising youths, like Xenophon or Plato, only indirectly: by jokingly teaching unpromising youths in their presence.
