En s'insérant dans un contexte étranger avec le bagage de son pays d'origine, le missionnaire emporte avec lui un mode de vie en société et une conception du monde. Les rencontres missionnaires affectent donc la vie de la " cité " ; elles sont dans ce sens éminemment " politiques ". Les acteurs de la mission, comme individus ou comme congrégations, ont joué un rôle ayant des incidences sur la vie politique des populations locales, au sens large. Parfois, ce rôle a été politique au sens partisan du terme. Ce livre interroge l'évolution des rapports entre missions et politique dans la seconde moitié du XXe siècle. Le contexte est alors aux luttes d'indépendance, à la décolonisation, à la chute des vocations missionnaires et à la " déchristianisation " de la société. Dans cette ambiance de crise du colonialisme, apparaissent alors des questions polémiques concernant aussi bien les missionnaires que les prêtres Fidei Donum : Faut-il partir ? Faut-il rester ? Ce débat prend notamment une teinte très politique. Certains missionnaires répondent à ces questions en prenant une position " développementiste " qui se focalise moins sur la religion elle-même que sur la situation socio-économique et politique des pays dits de mission : indépendances africaines et asiatiques ; dictatures latino-américaines ; contexte de guerre froide, de lutte anticommuniste, voire antiprotestante ou anticatholique, en fonction du côté où l'on se trouve. Cette option se traduit souvent par un engagement politique des missionnaires plus explicites qu'auparavant. La question de savoir comment ces investissements politiques se sont concrétisés sur le terrain ou en amont du travail missionnaire est au centre de ce volume. Celui-ci est le fruit du colloque du CREDIC - Centre de recherches européen sur la diffusion et l'inculturation du christianisme - qui s'est tenu à Bruxelles en août 2009

Catholic and Protestant missionaries followed their own, competing agendas rather than those of the colonial state. This volume unravels these agendas and challenges received wisdom on the histories of Rwanda and Burundi, as well as the colonial relationship between state and mission. The archives of the White Fathers Catholic missionary order in Rome and Paris are read alongside primary sources produced by the British Protestant Church Missionary Society to analyse their impact between 1900 and 1972 in Rwanda and Burundi. The colonial state was weaker than often assumed, and permeable by external radical influences. Denominational competition between Catholic and Protestant missionaries was a key motor of this radicalism. The colonial state in both kingdoms was a weak, reactive agent rather than a structuring form of power. This volume shows that missionaries were more committed and influential actors, but their inability to manage the mass demand for the education that they sought and delivered finally undermined the achievement of their aims. Missionaries and the Colonial State is a resource for historians of Christianity, Belgian Africa specialists, and scholars of colonialism.
