The joint NASA-ESA Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn is the most ambitious planetary mission since the VEGA mission to Venus and Halley in 1985/86 and the Viking arbiters and landers to Mars in 1976. This book was compiled from contributions given at the 7th IAA Symposium on Small Satellites for Earth Observation, May 4–8, 2009, Berlin (IAA – International Academy of Astronautics). From the 15 sessions for oral presentations and two poster sessions, 52 contributions were selected which are representative for the new developments and trends in the area of small satellites for Earth observation. They re ect the potentials of a diversity of missions and related technologies. This may be based on national projects or international co-operations, single satellites of constellations, pico-, nano-, micro- or mini-satellites, developed by companies, research institutions or agencies. The main focus is on new missions to monitor our Earth’s resources (Part I), and the environment in which our Earth is emb- ded (Part II). Part III deals with distributed space systems, a unique feature of small satellites and in most cases impractical to do with large satellites. Here we concentrate on constellations of satellites with focus on future missions relying on co-operating satellites. For all the new developments and projects we need well e- cated specialists coming from the universities. Many universities included already the development and implementation of small satellites in their curriculum. The u- versity satellites chapter (Part IV) shows the high quality which is already reached by some of the universities worldwide.

This publication contains graphical data necessary for the analysis of planetary exploration missions to Jupiter. Positional and geometric information spanning the time period from 1985 through 2020 is presented; the text explains the data and its usage. This volume is one in a planned series covering planetary mission targets. The purpose of this series of planetary geometry handbooks is to provide mission and science planners, as well as trajectory designers with graphical information sufficient for preliminary mission design and evaluation. It is intended to be used in conjunction with the appropriate volumes and parts of the Mission Design Handbooks. It extends their coverage by commencing in 1985 and continuing to the year 2020. This time span was chosen to provide sufficient mission duration flexibility for all Earth departures through 2005. The present Volume IV is devoted to data on the positions of the planet Jupiter. It presents information characterizing the geocentric and heliocentric positional geometry of a spacecraft while it is in the vicinity of the subject planetary body. The spacecraft could encompass a lander, an entry probe, or a flyby vehicle at encounter. Such wide usage of the data is possible because planetary positions change but slowly, while the distances to Earth or Sun are always large compared to those between the spacecraft and the target planet during the encounter.

Geometrical considerations are presented for analyzing use of the stellar occultation technique on long duration earth atmosphere monitoring missions. The simulated mission data are presented for three representative orbits. Bright near infrared stars are used as examples of how extensive global longitude-latitude coverage is obtained by performing occultation measurements on several stars during the course of a one year mission.
