This book argues for the primacy of spirituality in the practice of mission. Since God is the primary agent of mission and God works through the power of the Holy Spirit, it is through openness to the Spirit that mission finds its true character and has its authentic impact. This is demonstrated today particularly by movements of Christian faith in the global south which carry the good news to the heart of communities in every part of the world. Originating in the Edinburgh 2010 mission study project, the essays assembled in this volume show that today there is a renewal of the missionary impetus of the churches which is marked by its spiritual character. Here fresh motivation for mission is being found, moving people of faith to share the good news of Jesus Christ both within their own communities and by crossing frontiers to take the message to new contexts. Drawing on the rich, wide and varied experiences of scholars from the global South, this volume attempts to address spirituality and discipleship as an important emphasis in contemporary mission. I recommend this book to anyone seeking to know and understand what is happening on the mission front in this generation. -Opoku Onyinah, Chancellor of Pentecost University College, Chairman of the Church of Pentecost and President of Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council. ...a contribution to grasp the significance of spirituality for the quality and direction of Christian mission in the 21st Century. Maria Aranzazu Aguado, Former Roman Catholic Consultant in the World Council of Churches This book opens up a new frontier in missiology. Rich both in intellectual rigour and empathetic understanding, it will prove to be a formative text for missional spirituality in world Christianity. Prof Lalsangkima Pachuau, Asbury Theological Seminary Wonsuk Ma is Executive Director and David Yonggi Cho Research Tutor of Global Christianity of Oxford Centre for Mission Studies, Oxford, United Kingdom. Kenneth R. Ross is Church of Scotland minister at Netherlorn and Honorary Fellow of Edinburgh University School of Divinity. From 2001 to 2010 he chaired the Scottish 'Towards 2010' Council.

Authentic discipleship is a step-by-step method for achieving Christian spiritual maturity. It is a Bible-based process using 2 Peter chapter 1 as its source. The Apostle Peter reveals the process at the end of his life where he is expressing his concern for the spiritual well-being of his flock. The process reveals the actual expectations of the Lord for the spiritual development of Christian people for ministry and how to accomplish it. The people were first called Christians at Antioch because they followed the teachings of Christ. The term was meant to be derogatory but was never considered so by them. They not only followed Him but also actually intended to allow the Living Savior to express Himself through them even as John the Baptist cried out, "He must increase, but I must decrease." The more "Christlike" we can become, the greater our discipleship is realized. It is the aim of this book to help Christians, who so desire, to realize their goal as the Lord permits.

If all of the earth is God's domain, why are Christians so terribly provincial? We rarely leave our church buildings, and our spirituality rarely takes us beyond ourselves. Veteran church leaders Roger Helland and Leonard Hjalmarson observe that Jesus begins his mission in the temple, where he wows the religious elite and chides his parents by saying, "Didn't you know I had to be in my Father's house?" But Jesus doesn't stay in the temple; indeed, in Christ the temple of the Lord is on the move--even to the ends of the earth. In this book the authors helpfully reconnect spirituality and mission, showing you how the spiritual life, when lived properly, follows a similar progression: we "come home" to Christ, loving him from our heart and soul and mind and strength. And then we set forth to love our neighbors as ourself. Discover how through this process you can reclaim the whole of God's kingdom for his glory and the fulfillment of your heart's longing.

Authors from eighteen countries give us their perspectives on biblical principles and cultural expressions of spirituality particularly as the church engages in God’s mission. The anthology of texts enriches our understanding of the depth and the meaning of being spiritual and the diversity of forms to live out the Christian faith. The issue today is how spirituality should direct and guide a daily life as followers of Jesus in the engagement in the mission of God. No doubt that it has to do with our inner life and our relationship to God, but it is in showing our love and concern to others that we prove our love to God, according to the Apostle John (1 John 4). Mission without spirituality will only be a human effort to convince people of religious theories. Spirituality without a missionary involvement of the church will not express God’s desire that the transforming gospel reaches every person. This book will help you rethink your understanding of what is spiritual, revisit your own spiritual journey, and appreciate the different forms of spirituality as they are described and performed around the globe.

Vatican II’s famous declaration that "the church on earth is by its very nature missionary” has often been taken out of context and used to support all manner of church initiatives. But, the conclusion of the statement—"since . . . it has its origin in the mission of the Son and the Holy Spirit"—is of monumental importance. In The Way of Discipleship, theologian Anthony Gittins describes the eternal mission of the Trinity, historically brought "down to earth" in the ministry of Jesus, and then continued to the ends of the earth by those called and sent as disciples throughout future generations. Gittins explains that Christian discipleship must be the living out of Jesus' own example in many different times and places. He encourages people of all ages to follow the invitation of Jesus to be missionary disciples. The Way of Discipleship explores several New Testament examples of Jesus' call and commissioning, distills the principles involved, and then recontextualizes the stories so that they pose a direct challenge to disciples today. In this way, Gittins builds up a picture both of "the Way" of Jesus himself, and of the way in which today's disciples can loyally follow his call to mission.

This book is called a festschrift--meaning a book of essays written to honor those who have served the academic community well over a long period of time. Drs Wonsuk and Julie Ma, the honorees in this book, served as faculty members, Journal pioneers and editors and academic dean (Wonsuk) at the Asia Pacific Theological Seminary (www.apts.edu) for twenty-four years, 1983-2006. In 2006, Wonsuk accepted an invitation to become the Executive Director of the Oxford Centre for Mission Studies in the United Kingdom and Julie accepted an invitation to become a research mentor at the same institution. “Take time and trouble to keep yourself spiritually fit.” — 1 Tim. 4:7, J. B. Phillips Translation As J. Oswald Sanders points out, true discipleship is more than intellectual assent to a belief in Christ; it involves the whole person and lifestyle. True disciples pursue their Master. They know that God is watching over their faith, but they also take Scripture’s command seriously: “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you.” They take pains, by His power, to look more and more like Jesus. This book will help you to be such a disciple. It examines Jesus’ teaching on what it means to follow Him, helping you become the kind of Christian Jesus wants you to be—not one devised by man or even other Christians. You’ll learn: The profile of an ideal disciple Conditions for discipleship The tests that disciples endure How disciples pray and grow The posture and practices of a disciple And more For anyone who wants to be not just a believer in Christ, but an imitator of Him, this book is a treasured resource. Includes questions for reflection, ideal for both individual and group study.
