Explores how the church has engaged—and should engage—the American context What might faithful and meaningful Christian witness look like within our changing contemporary American context? After analyzing contemporary challenges and developing a missiological approach for the US church, Craig Van Gelder and Dwight Zscheile reflect on the long, complex, and contested history of Christian mission in America. Five distinct historical periods from the beginning of the colonial era to the dawn of the third millennium are reviewed and critiqued. They then bring the story forward to the present day, discussing current realities confronting the church, discerning possibilities of where and how the Spirit of God might be at work today, and imagining what participating in the triune God’s mission may look like in an uncertain tomorrow.

What does the Bible say about God's purpose for us, the witness of the church, and our mission to spread the message of the gospel? Chris Wright's pioneering 2006 book, The Mission of God, revealed that the typical Christian understanding of "missions" encompasses only a small part of God's overarching mission for the world. God is relentlessly reclaiming the whole of creation for himself, and each of us fit into that big-picture plan. In The Mission of God's People, Wright argues that having a strong biblical theology that shapes our thinking and behavior must be in place before answering the call of the Great Commission. Wright first steps back and answers some of the biggest questions of God's story and our place within it: Who are the people of God? What kind of people are we? What are the priorities and limits of our mission? What exactly is the gospel that lies at the core of our mission? What was it that made Christianity a missionary faith from the very start? While answering these essential questions, Wright thoroughly details what the Old and New Testaments teach Christians about being God's people. He addresses questions of both ecclesiology (the theology of the church) and missiology (the practice and methodology of missions) with topics like "called to care for creation," "called to bless the nations," "sending and being sent, and "rejecting false gods." ____________ Part of the Biblical Theology for Life series, this practical and robust book will help you and your church ground your witness-bearing purpose and worship on the solid foundation of biblical understanding and reflection.

Although, there appears to have been no critical responses so far, the report on Mission-Shaped Churches is being used all over England in the training of people for public ministry. Here, for the first time, is a serious theological evaluation of the framework within which this policy document is presented. John Hull's response to the report raises hugely important questions about the concepts of Kingdom, Church, Gospel and Mission, concepts that are not distinguished clearly, consistently or acceptably in the report. He looks in particular to the consequences this has on the treatment given to issues surrounding poverty, consumerism, pluralism in faith and community. Whilst the author shares the hopes for a renewal of the church, most strongly, and is an avid supporter of the fresh expression of churches, he raises critical questions about the way we go about creating cell churches and cafe churches. He also raises questions about the inherent territorialism, and possible ignorance of realistic situations of poverty or multi-faith communities that the Church may harbour. Although, the report may look for a mission-shaped church what it finds and seems to want to recreate is a church-shaped mission.

This biography recalls the fascinating life of the second Reformed minister of New Amsterdam (present-day New York), Everardus Bogardus, a poor but gifted youth who worked himself upward into the ministry. The first part of the book provides an in-depth analysis of his mystical experience as a 15-year old orphan in his hometown Woerden (Holland) and its significance in the Dutch context. The second part explores Bogardus’s agency in the colonial context and his appropriation of his new fatherland - as a minister among the Europeans, the Native Americans, and the blacks, as a spokesman of the opposition during Kieft’s War, and as a colonist married to the famous Anneke Jans. This biography is conceived as a mentality history of an early modern male individual. Fulfilling God’s Mission: The Two Worlds of Dominie Everardus Bogardus, 1607-1647 has been granted the 2008 Hendrick's Award.

Respecting Congregations written by Clyde Ervine and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-05-22 with Religion categories.

Across North America, congregations and their leaders are experiencing unprecedented anxiety. Despite the many organizational and growth strategies offered to congregational leaders over the last five decades, few congregations are growing, and most are coping with numerical decline. With fewer people attending worship and fewer students offering themselves for ordination, at least in mainline denominations, many Christians worry that the church across the continent is in the process of dying. While Ervine’s book may not offer swift solutions, it does offer hope. Fearful congregations and their leaders are invited to set the search for quick-fix solutions aside and, instead, take the time to discover and then respect the identity, purpose, and ministry priorities that the New Testament provides to congregations. This book is written in the conviction that clarity about their “in Christ” identity, their purpose in God’s ongoing mission, and what is essential to their ministry will give congregations new confidence to offer Christian witness rooted in biblical teaching while respecting twenty-first-century cultural realities.

The Dialectics Of Mission written by Elmer A. Guzman and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing PLC this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-09-15 with Religion categories.

Drawing on the resources of contemporary systematic theologians Kevin Vanhoozer and Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen, Elmer A. Guzman explores the generative dimension of mission for the formation of doctrine for a church that needs to witness in a pluralistic world. Guzman argues that understanding doctrinal formation and development depends on the missional dimension of doctrinal hermeneutics. In other words, these theological concepts and practices are justified based on the negotiation between theological sources' identity markers and the context's diversity markers. This book shows how perspectives arising from the structural elements in theological methodology shed fresh light on missional theology and the interconnections between the doctrinal loci in theology.
