With this book, Yaakov Ariel offers the first comprehensive history of Protestant evangelization of Jews in America to the present day. Based on unprecedented research in missionary archives as well as Jewish writings, the book analyzes the theology and activities of both the missions and the converts and describes the reactions of the Jewish community, which in turn helped to shape the evangelical activity directed toward it. Ariel delineates three successive waves of evangelism, the first directed toward poor Jewish immigrants, the second toward American-born Jews trying to assimilate, and the third toward Jewish baby boomers influenced by the counterculture of the Vietnam War era. After World War II, the missionary impulse became almost exclusively the realm of conservative evangelicals, as the more liberal segments of American Christianity took the path of interfaith dialogue. As Ariel shows, these missionary efforts have profoundly influenced Christian-Jewish relations. Jews have seen the missionary movement as a continuation of attempts to delegitimize Judaism and to do away with Jews through assimilation or annihilation. But to conservative evangelical Christians, who support the State of Israel, evangelizing Jews is a manifestation of goodwill toward them.

Many missions to the Jewish people, such as Jews for Jesus, use Romans 1:16 as a proof text to encourage the evangelisation of the Jewish people as a priority: 'to the Jew first, and then to the Greek' (Jewish Missional Priority). Is this interpretation of the text legitimate? After considering when this priority first appeared, the author exposes and evaluates the arguments commonly used to promote it. His thorough exegesis of Romans 1:16-17 ultimately resolves the question. He takes the opportunity to explore some possible eschatological implications developed from Romans 9-11 and the parables of Jesus. Will the first also be the last?

"Throughout early modern British history, evangelical sentiment was a consistent feature of English society. Toward the Jews, this evangelical feeling constituted a particular fascination with the character and destiny of Israel. A new commitment to spread the gospel developed in the nineteenth century as organized missionary activity fostered a novel phenomenon in English life. Throughout the 1800's, an unprecedented number of Anglo-Christian organizations were founded in England with the aim of converting Jews. By the 1890's, an international community of evangelists to the Jews began to emerge. These English missions ... exemplified a new type of attitude toward the Jew. The medieval spirit of antagonism that persisted throughout the ages was no longer the dominant perception. A new vision of universality pervaded the English spirit. This attitudinal metamorphosis of modern conversionism engendered the notion that a special responsibility existed for the evangelization of Jews. The primary function of this study is to discuss the nature of missionary activity toward Jews between the years 1890-1914, and highlight the response of the Jewish community to the growth of Christian evangelization." -- Introduction.
