This is the story of a young officer in the Indian Army who commanded a company in the Burma Campaign of 1943 to 1945. It covers the part played by the author and his unit in the long campaign to recover Burma, starting with the fierce close-quarter fighting in the jungles and rice-fields in the Arakan in which the Japanese suffered their first major defeat. The story moves on to Kohima which was the scene of some of the bitterest fighting in the Burma War, and which saved India. For the author, however, the Burma War was a prelude to the bitter campaign in Korea (1950-51), where the author commanded a company of the Middlesex Regiment in the harsh conditions of extreme cold and snow, as part of the Commonwealth Brigade fighting in close co-operation with the Americans.

This is the first book to provide a comprehensive overview of the land war during the Second World War in South-East Asia and the South and South-West Pacific. The extensive existing literature focuses on particular armies – Japanese, British, American, Australian or Indian – and/or on particular theatres – the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Malaya or Burma. This book, on the contrary, argues that warfare in all the theatres was very similar, especially the difficulties of the undeveloped terrain, and that there was considerable interchange of ideas between the allied armies which enabled the spread of best practice among them. The book considers tactics, training, technology and logistics, assesses the changing state of the combat effectiveness of the different armies, and traces the course of the war from the Japanese Blitzkrieg of 1941, through the later stalemate, and the hard fought Allied fightback. Although the book concentrates on ground forces, due attention is also given to air forces and amphibious operations. One important argument put forward by the author is that the defeat of the Japanese was not inevitable and that it was brought about by chance and considerable tactical ingenuity on the part of US and British imperial forces.

In the latter part of the nineteen century, Japan planned to rule Korea. Takahashi Genji assassinates Korean Queen Min and her royal guards on October 8, 1895. Finally, on August 22, 1910, Korea is annexed to Japan. The Koreans constantly fight against the Japanese rule for their independence. Mija’s father is arrested, tortured, and imprisoned for years. Consequently, he becomes partially disabled. By accident, a Japanese scientific genius Ichiro discovers the Korean girl prodigy Mija, whose dream is to be a great writer. Her gifted talent ignites Ichiro’s love. Fathers of both sides reject their love affair. However, their love continues because there is no national boundary in knowledge and love. Seeing his people’s suffering, Mija’s brother Kwyunsoo attempts to assassinate Japanese Governor General in 1943. All of Mija’s family is arrested by the Japanese police. Byunghong, who has loved Mija since childhood, sends Mija to the Korean Women’s Volunteer Army to save her life with the help of Japanese commander of the military police. In the Philippines, astonishingly Mija meets Ichiro at the Lucban Military Base. They get married. Ichiro helps Mija escape from the camp, killing a Japanese sentinel. In the jungle, Mija saves the Philippine guerilla commander from a Japanese attack and becomes a guerilla member. During the fierce guerilla battle, Mija delivers Ichiro’s baby. Mr. Manuel Roxas rescues Mija from an approaching execution. In Manila, during the bloody fighting, a hand grenade explodes nearby and Ichiro falls to the ground. After the war, Mija leaves to unite with her son and waits to go to her motherland Korea.

Since this review is based mainly on published information in the English language public domain, such limitation of the exercise might result in a bias towards those countries where the published and/or accessible information exists. In order to reduce such bias, attempts were made to review unpublished "grey" literature as well, although this was by no means comprehensive.

This comparative dictionary provides a bottom-up reconstruction of the Rote‑Meto languages of western Timor. Rote-Meto is one low-level Austronesian subgroup of eastern Indonesia/Timor-Leste. It contains 1,174 reconstructions to Proto-Rote-Meto (or a lower node) with supporting evidence from the modern Rote-Meto languages. These reconstructions are accompanied by information on how they relate to forms in other languages including Proto‑Malayo‑Polynesian etyma (where known) and/or out-comparisons to putative cognates in other languages of the region. The dictionary also contains two finder-lists: English to Rote-Meto, and Austronesian reconstructions with Rote-Meto reflexes. The dictionary is preceded by three introductory chapters. The first chapter contains a guide to using the dictionary as well as discussion of the data sources. The second chapter provides a short synchronic overview of the Rote-Meto langauges. The third chapter discusses the historical background of Rote-Meto. This includes sound correspondences, the internal subgrouping of the Rote-Meto family, and the position of Rote-Meto within Malayo-Polynesian more broadly. Searchable electronic versions of the comparative dictionary are provided in two formats at http://hdl.handle.net/1885/251618. The first electronic version is a Lexique Pro export of the dictionary. The Lexique Pro file contains the same data and information in the book version of the dictionary, but does not contain the introductory chapters.
