O meglio una storia dell’uguaglianza, perché nel corso della storia si verifica un processo di lungo termine finalizzato a una maggiore uguaglianza sociale, economica e politica. Non si tratta certo di una storia pacifica, e ancor meno lineare. Le rivolte e le rivoluzioni, le lotte sociali e le crisi di qualsiasi natura svolgono un ruolo decisivo nella storia dell’uguaglianza, che è anche scandita da fasi involutive e da derive identitarie. Resta il fatto che esiste, almeno dalla fine del XVIII secolo, un processo storico orientato verso l’uguaglianza. Il mondo dei primi anni del XXI secolo, per quanto ingiusto possa sembrare, è più egualitario di quello del 1950 o di quello del 1900, i quali, di per sé, erano già per molti aspetti più egualitari di quelli del 1850 o del 1780. Affermare l’esistenza di una propensione verso l’uguaglianza non costituisce affatto un motivo di soddisfazione. Si tratta, al contrario, di un invito a continuare la lotta su un fondamento storico solido. Riflettendo sul modo in cui il processo verso l’uguaglianza si è effettivamente prodotto, è possibile trarre lezioni preziose per il futuro, comprendere meglio sia le lotte e le mobilitazioni che lo hanno reso possibile, sia i dispositivi istituzionali e i sistemi giuridici, sociali, fiscali, scolastici, elettorali che hanno consentito all’uguaglianza di diventare una realtà duratura. Purtroppo, però, il processo di apprendimento collettivo delle istituzioni giuste perde la sua forza, spesso a causa dell’amnesia storica, del nazionalismo intellettuale e dell’impermeabilità dei saperi. Per proseguire la marcia verso l’uguaglianza è dunque urgente tornare a studiare la storia e oltrepassare i confini nazionali e disciplinari.
