El mito del eterno retorno, escrito hace ya mas de medio siglo, es considerado un verdadero clasico. En esta particular introduccion a la filosofia de la historia, en lugar de analizar el propio fenomeno historico, Eliade examina las creencias y concepciones fundamentales de las sociedades arcaicas, que se caracterizan por su rebeldia frente al tiempo concreto y por su nostalgia de un regreso periodico a los mitos de los origenes. Esta negacion de la historia por parte de las sociedades primitivas se expresa por medio de lo que el autor ha llamado "los arquetipos y la repeticion." El rechazo de la idea del progreso configura una cierta valoracion metafisica de la existencia humana. Eliade se dirige tanto al filosofo como al etnologo o al orientalista, pero sobre todo al hombre culto no especializado, a fin de llamar la atencion sobre las posibilidades espirituales, que, aun cuando han sido superadas en la mayor parte del mundo, regido hoy por la cultura occidental, son sumamente instructivas para el conocimiento y la historia del hombre.

The Myth of Quetzalcoatl is a translation of Alfredo López Austin’s 1973 book Hombre-Dios: Religión y politica en el mundo náhuatl.
