Se reúnen en esta obra los textos narrativos más importantes legados por el Antiguo Egipto, así como una serie de «disputas» y leyendas de trasfondo mitológico o fantástico. Todos ellos tienen en común el hecho de ser creaciones literarias, obras «de fantasía» o «de evasión», lejos de los estereotipos de los textos religiosos, funerarios o áulicos. Comprenden desde narraciones de viajes hasta cuentos y fábulas, desde escritos más «realistas» hasta narraciones maravillosas o de trasfondo mitológico, desde personajes «comunes» hasta reyes, dioses, difuntos, espectros o incluso personajes vegetales o inanimados. Como explica Jesús López, «los géneros literarios no están a menudo suficientemente diferenciados cuando se trata de textos egipcios. Se puede dudar frecuentemente de si este o aquel texto es un 'cuento', una 'fábula' o un 'mito'. Más aún, algunos de los 'cuentos' que aquí se recogen fueron escritos con fines didácticos y tienen lazos de parentesco con la literatura sapiencial. Finalmente, dos de los más importantes, «Las aventuras de Sinuhé» y «El viaje de Unamón», son el relato de los acontecimientos vividos por dos personajes que muy bien pudieran haber existido. Se trataría, en tal caso, de biografías hermoseadas por autores de gran calidad [...] Todos los textos de esta colección fueron copiados por los antiguos escribas en escritura hierática, en papiros, en tablillas de madera o en trozos de piedra o cerámica (ostraca), desde la dinastía XII (ca. 2000 a.C.) hasta el final de la época ptolemaica (siglo I a.C.)». Los textos, en muchos casos traducidos por primera vez al español, son ofrecidos en versión directa, y van acompañados de introducciones histórico-literarias así como de un completo aparato bibliográfico y crítico.
