El estado mexicano de San Luis Potosí está compuesto por cuatro regiones geográficas: Altiplano, Capital, Huasteca y Media. Dada la riqueza cultural y la diversidad étnica, en tales regiones se cuentan infinidad de historias muy variadas que abarcan el gran espectro de la mitología y el folklore del mundo entero, según conluye Homero Adame en sus investigaciones de campo comparadas con sus estudios y análisis. Esas historias no son simples pláticas de aparecidos o fantasmas; de tesoros y túneles misteriosos; de la creación del mundo, de animales o del ser humano; de milagros o apariciones de santos y vírgenes; de pueblos que existen en otra realidad alterna; de castigos divinos, o de creencias en torno al clima y los fenómenos naturales. Son más que eso: tales historias hablan del tiempo mítico, del tiempo profano, del tiempo sagrado, contemplan los arquetipos de teofanías y hierofanías, explican el pensamiento mágico-religioso o las supersticiones, recrean las paradojas temporales, narran hazañas de personajes heroicos -humanos o animales- y, de tal modo, ponen a San Luis Potosí en el contexto de la mitología universal.
