Michael Knoll, Martin Schröder, Thilo Gamber und Martin Ehlert Dieser Sammelband stellt Forschungsarbeiten junger Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler vor, die mit dem Deutschen Studienpreis 2007 ausgezeichnet wurden. Mit der Ausschreibung zum Thema „Mittelpunkt Mensch? Leitbilder, Modelle und Ideen für die Vereinbarkeit von Arbeit und Leben“ endete ein dr- teiliger Wettbewerbszyklus. Von 2005 bis 2007 hatte die Körber-Stiftung den Deutschen Studienpreis zu der Frage ausgeschrieben, welche Rolle Arbeit im menschlichen Leben spielen muss und soll. Wie schon zu den beiden voran- gangenen Ausschreibungen „Mythos Markt?“ (2005) und „Ausweg Wachstum?“ (2006) liegen hiermit auch die Arbeiten der Preisträger von 2007 in Form eines Sammelbandes im VS-Verlag vor. Die präsentierten Beiträge stellen die besten zehn von insgesamt rund 400 eingereichten Arbeiten dar. Die Autoren und Au- rinnen hinterfragen bestehende Leitbilder kritisch und bieten ungewöhnliche Perspektiven aus den Bereichen Kunst, Ökonomie, Psychologie, Theologie und aus den Ingenieur- und Sozialwissenschaften an. Der erste Teil des Bandes – Leitbilder: Von alten und neuen Arbeitswelten – thematisiert die Schwierigkeit, Arbeit als Leitbild für den Menschen im 21. Ja- hundert zu fassen. In ihrem Beitrag „Bekleidungsvverk“ erteilt Bianca Koczan der Idee eines einzigen kohärenten Leitbilds für Arbeit eine Absage. Stattdessen präsentiert sie das gleichzeitige Bestehen unterschiedlicher Konzepte, Vorst- lungen und Assoziationen, die den Arbeitsbegriff im 21. Jahrhundert prägen. Die Überlegungen von Bianca Koczan ergeben sich aus ihrer konkreten gestalte- schen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema Arbeitsbekleidung. Michael Knoll dagegen hat in seinem Beitrag die Erkenntnisse aus einer - pirischen Interviewstudie verarbeitet.

Stem cells have generated a lot of excitement among the researchers, clinicians and the public alike. Various types of stem cells are being evaluated for their regenerative potential. Marginal benefit resulting by transplanting autologus stem cells (deemed to be absolutely safe) in various clinical conditions has been proposed to be a growth factor effect rather than true regeneration. In contrast, various pre-clinical studies have been undertaken, using differentiated cells from embryonic stem cells or induced pluripotent stem cells have shown promise, functional improvement and no signs of teratoma formation. The scientists are not in a rush to reach the clinic but a handful of clinical studies have shown promise. This book is a collection of studies/reviews, beginning with an introduction to the pluripotent stem cells and covering various aspects like derivation, differentiation, ethics, etc., and hence would provide insight into the recent standing on the pluripotent stem cells biology. This book presents in detail the problems and ethical challenges in daily oncological practice. In western industrialized countries, roughly 25 percent of all citizens still die from cancer. Despite significant progress in basic science and in individual areas of clinical care, even in the 21st century, being diagnosed with cancer has lost none of its dread and can still be a death sentence. This situation raises many problems and challenges for medical ethics, e.g., the question of the benefits and risks of prevention programs, or the right to know and not to know. Clinical trials with cancer patients and quality assurance for surgery, radiotherapy and medication also pose a series of ethical dilemmas. Furthermore, cancer treatment is a psychological challenge not only for patients but also for physicians and caregivers.
