Excerpt from Myths of the Southern Sierra Miwok The third peopling of the world was by bird and mammal people, most of whom later became our present birds and mammals. The chiefs9 of this people were Morning-star and Puma. Their home was in the large chamber of Bower Cave.10 The stalactitic formations now to be seen in this cave are in reality only the dried meat and entrails which these chiefs had as food. Raven was the great hunter at this cave home of the chiefs. Wild cat, Fox, and certain others were also very important personages. Raven was originally pure white, but when he went out hunting the deer saw him and he was unable to get near enough to shoot. He smeared charcoal paint all over his body and found that he was less easily seen. Hence his present black color. All of these people, except Morning-star, became birds and mammals as indicated. Edward Winslow Gifford (1887-1959) devoted his life to studying California Indian ethnography as a professor of anthropology and director of the Museum of Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley. Born in Oakland, he became an assistant curator of ornithology at the California Academy of Sciences after graduating from high school; he never attended college. He joined the University of California s Museum of Anthropology in 1912 as an assistant curator, becoming a curator in 1925 and a professor in 1945. Working in close association with the preeminent leader in California anthropology, Alfred L. Kroeber, Gifford produced more than 100 publications. His numerous contributions to salvage ethnography have left an invaluable record of the state s disappearing native cultures. He developed the University s Museum of Anthropology into a major U. S. institution with its major field research and collections.

The fourteen stories presented in this collection were secured during 1913 and 1914 among the Central Sierra Miwok of Tuolumne County, California. The last three, which are exceedingly brief, were told by William Fuller of Soulsbyville. The remaining eleven were obtained from Thomas Williams of Jamestown. All are sentence-by-sentence translations into English of myths which were recorded in Miwok on the phonograph.
