This vital work is both an introduction to, and a survey of singularity theory, in particular, studying singularities by means of differential forms. Here, some ideas and notions that arose in global algebraic geometry, namely mixed Hodge structures and the theory of period maps, are developed in the local situation to study the case of isolated singularities of holomorphic functions. The author introduces the Gauss-Manin connection on the vanishing cohomology of a singularity, that is on the cohomology fibration associated to the Milnor fibration, and draws on the work of Brieskorn and Steenbrink to calculate this connection, and the limit mixed Hodge structure. This is an excellent resource for all researchers in singularity theory, algebraic or differential geometry.

Singularity theory appears in numerous branches of mathematics, as well as in many emerging areas such as robotics, control theory, imaging, and various evolving areas in physics. The purpose of this proceedings volume is to cover recent developments in singularity theory and to introduce young researchers from developing countries to singularities in geometry and topology. The contributions discuss singularities in both complex and real geometry. As such, they provide a natural continuation of the previous school on singularities held at ICTP (1991), which is recognized as having had a major influence in the field.

This is the third volume of the Handbook of Geometry and Topology of Singularities, a series which aims to provide an accessible account of the state of the art of the subject, its frontiers, and its interactions with other areas of research. This volume consists of ten chapters which provide an in-depth and reader-friendly survey of various important aspects of singularity theory. Some of these complement topics previously explored in volumes I and II, such as, for instance, Zariski’s equisingularity, the interplay between isolated complex surface singularities and 3-manifold theory, stratified Morse theory, constructible sheaves, the topology of the non-critical levels of holomorphic functions, and intersection cohomology. Other chapters bring in new subjects, such as the Thom–Mather theory for maps, characteristic classes for singular varieties, mixed Hodge structures, residues in complex analytic varieties, nearby and vanishing cycles, and more. Singularities are ubiquitous in mathematics and science in general. Singularity theory interacts energetically with the rest of mathematics, acting as a crucible where different types of mathematical problems interact, surprising connections are born and simple questions lead to ideas which resonate in other parts of the subject, and in other subjects. Authored by world experts, the various contributions deal with both classical material and modern developments, covering a wide range of topics which are linked to each other in fundamental ways. The book is addressed to graduate students and newcomers to the theory, as well as to specialists who can use it as a guidebook.

This is the first part of the Proceedings of the meeting ``School and Workshop on the Geometry and Topology of Singularities'', held in Cuernavaca, Mexico, from January 8th to 26th of 2007, in celebration of the 60th Birthday of Le Dung Trang. This volume contains fourteen cutting-edge research articles on algebraic and analytic aspects of singularities of spaces and maps. By reading this volume, and the accompanying volume on geometric and topological aspects of singularities, the reader should gain an appreciation for the depth, breadth, and beauty of the subject, and also find a rich source of questions and problems for future study.

This is comprehensive basic monograph on mixed Hodge structures. Building up from basic Hodge theory the book explains Delingne's mixed Hodge theory in a detailed fashion. Then both Hain's and Morgan's approaches to mixed Hodge theory related to homotopy theory are sketched. Next comes the relative theory, and then the all encompassing theory of mixed Hodge modules. The book is interlaced with chapters containing applications. Three large appendices complete the book.

Singularities Of Differentiable Maps Volume 1 written by V.I. Arnold and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-05-24 with Mathematics categories.

Singularity theory is a far-reaching extension of maxima and minima investigations of differentiable functions, with implications for many different areas of mathematics, engineering (catastrophe theory and the theory of bifurcations), and science. The three parts of this first volume of a two-volume set deal with the stability problem for smooth mappings, critical points of smooth functions, and caustics and wave front singularities. The second volume describes the topological and algebro-geometrical aspects of the theory: monodromy, intersection forms, oscillatory integrals, asymptotics, and mixed Hodge structures of singularities. The first volume has been adapted for the needs of non-mathematicians, presupposing a limited mathematical background and beginning at an elementary level. With this foundation, the book's sophisticated development permits readers to explore more applications than previous books on singularities.
