The amount of people who suffer from some kind of visual disability right now is staggering: 253 million people were suffering from some type of visual impairment by 2015, and this numbers aren't stopping. These are people that can't get access to an equal learning experience as child or a fair competition in the workplace. Tactile Graphics are a kind of representation of images for the blind that can leverage in some way the disadvantages these people have, by letting the blind sense the content of images through their touch. Although the technology for creating these kind of images has improved a lot, the means to find them and provide Tactile Graphics to people is very inefficient. In this paper, we present a solution to this problem, taking advantage of the knowledge we have about Tactile Graphics at the moment and using the benefits of Machine Learning to know what exactly defines a good tactile graphic.

"In this paper we present a tool to help find images for the blind on the web. This tool also allows users to test the quality of an image to be used as a tactile graphic. First, some techniques to create tactile graphics are addressed. Then, the intended end users are described, followed by the current approaches in this field. Next, we show how, using state-of-the-art Machine Learning technologies, we train a Machine Learning model capable of determining the quality, understood as the facility for a blind person to understand its content, of a tactile graphic. Graphical information has become a critical method for portraying information for education, work and personal tasks and decisions. Unfortunately there are currently limited means of providing this information to individuals who are blind or visually impaired: alternate text is frequently missing, and accessible tactile diagrams tend to be time consuming to make and require expertise in order for them to be interpretable (which may be costly to the user and/or impossible to get). The aim of this project is to provide an accessible system to automatically generate tactile graphics for those who need to interpret information contained in visual images. Previous automatic conversion methods have not been especially successful and are not used in normal practice, possibly because they have not taken advantage of current advances in the field of image processing. In the preliminary work, we systematically look at the myriad of image segmentation methods that exist as part of the conversion process. For those techniques, previous researchers have often compared the results to the "gold standard" of human segmentation to evaluate their success. However, there are important difference between this "gold standard" and what is needed for tactile graphics. Key steps by professionals who create tactile diagrams are simplification so that the information is manageable to extract through the tactile sense, elimination of perspective as it is difficult to interpret tactually, and possible spreading of information across multiple diagrams. Planned work is to examine more closely the underlying themes to the myriad of algorithm are relevant for tactile diagrams. Future work, will also involve taking the initially segmented image, simplifying it further by removing "unimportant" detail so that it is manageable by the tactile system and removing perspective based on geometric information found in the image.

The dominance of vision is so strong in sighted people that touch is sometimes considered as a minor perceptual modality. However, touch is a powerful tool which contributes significantly to our knowledge of space and objects. Its intensive use by blind persons allows them to reach the same levels of knowledge and cognition as their sighted peers.In this book, specialized researchers present the recent state of knowledge about the cognitive functioning of touch. After an analysis of the neurophysiology and neuropsychology of touch, exploratory manual behaviors, intramodal haptic (tactual-kinesthetic) abilities and cross-modal visual-tactual coordination are examined in infants, children and adults, and in non-human primates. These studies concern both sighted and blind persons in order to know whether early visual deprivation modifies the modes of processing space and objects.
