Le città sono cambiate, è cambiato il modo di intendere la città e di viverla. E questo spesso al di fuori della pianificazione e delle politiche urbane. Al punto che si possono nutrire dei forti dubbi sull’esistenza ancora di uno “spazio pubblico di relazione”, quell’armatura fisica e relazionale che è alla base delle nostre città e che nelle espansioni urbane recenti – in tutto il mondo – ha perso quasi totalmente senso. Quali sono pertanto le “cautele” da adottare nei diversi “paesaggi” che compongono le nostre città e territori? Dalla storia alle nuove tecnologie attraverso le persone: gli “studi urbani” possono avere un ruolo per interpretare e governare questi cambiamenti? Di tutto ciò si è discusso nel 9° Congresso Città e Territorio Virtuale “Città Memoria Gente”. A questa edizione, che si è svolta a Roma dal 2 al 4 ottobre 2013, hanno partecipato oltre 130 tra relatori e espositori provenienti da numerosi Paesi d’Europa, America, Asia e Africa, i quali hanno animato le dodici sessioni tematiche seguendo i tre temi chiave del congresso, Città, Memoria, Gente. La ricchezza e la varietà dei contributi presentati costituiscono l’essenza di questo volume, che va ad alimentare un dibattito (multi)disciplinare che, nei diversi Congressi “Città e Territorio Virtuale”, ha raggiunto e coinvolto una ormai numerosa comunità scientifica intercontinentale.

This book is the result of a research project designed and carried out at the Department of Architecture, University of Florence. This book discusses urban public spaces and, more specifically, run-down, inactive micro-spaces that are barely used due to their location, dimensions, morphology or semantic characteristics. In literature, these spaces are often defined as “residual urban spaces.” A large abandoned industrial area on the outskirts of a town or a small interstitial space in a historical centre can be residual. With respect to such a broad subject matter, the book seeks to radically limit the field, concentrating on public residual spaces found in the oldest parts of cities. The book reflects on this theme and introduces a method for reading and assessment of the residuality of public spaces in historical contexts (Residuality Assessment Process) which was tested in the historical centre of Florence. It is the authors’ view that residual spaces, above all if designed according to a system logic, can go from being problems to potential activators of urban and social regeneration processes, offering a useful contribution to improve city life.

Agricultural land and woodland in the vicinity of urban settlements appear increasingly to represent a key element and strategic resource for addressing issues of residential quality, and hence the requalification of the urban construct. In effect, from a "vacuum" awaiting construction, the periurban agricultural territory is emerging as the yardstick for a new measurement and integration of the public policies governing urban and territorial plans and those for rural development. This book proposes a number of cues and methodological and operational elements to stimulate reflection on this new scenario. It does so through the exploration of a number of significant and innovative experiences in Italy and the rest of Europe, while at the same time also proposing an initial appraisal of the process of design and social mobilisation for the definition of the scenario for the Prato Agricultural Park.
