Mapping Urban Spaces focuses on medium-sized European cities and more specifically on their open spaces from psychological, sociological, and aesthetic points of view. [English]:Starting from one of the most significant chapters of Leonardo's Libro di Pittura, we hwant to focus on the media - namely on the narrative, descriptive and graphics methodologies together with the techniques adopting during the modern and contemporary age as 'diffusers' of the landscape image - and on the deriving potential models for the enhancement of the historical landscape heritage.Partendo dalla nozione di paesaggio nella storia moderna e contemporanea, nel testo si affrontano le problematiche concernenti l‟evoluzione del suo significato fino al dibattito sulle diverse accezioni recentemente acquisite, con particolare riferimento ai contesti storici urbani. La lezione che si trae dai primi studi di Leonardo sulla percezione del paesaggio naturale e antropizzato, dalle guide e taccuini di viaggio del Cinque e Seicento, fino alla produzione di artisti e viaggiatori tra Sette e Ottocento e al più recente repertorio fotografico o cinematografico, mostra l‟importante ruolo da attribuirsi oggi all‟immagine storica del paesaggio quale strumento per l‟individuazione dell‟identità di un territorio, ormai in buona parte scevra da meri contenuti percettivi e oleografici, e sempre più legata ai fattori umani, storici e sociali, in una parola „culturali‟, che nell‟immagine vanno letti e tradotti. / [Italiano]: Si tratta in effetti di riconoscere nei caratteri „percettibili‟ di un paesaggio, attraverso gli strumenti della storia della città e dell‟iconografia storica, i valori culturali condivisi di un sito o di un insediamento: in tal senso l‟esperienza del Convegno CIRICE 2016 potrà segnare un nuovo passo non solo ai fini di un più consapevole riconoscimento di tali valori attraverso lo studio dei media adottati nella descrizione del paesaggio storico, ma verso un‟azione di tutela volta alla trasmissione e valorizzazione della memoria di quei luoghi.

Urban planning is a complex field of knowledge and practice. Through the decades, theoretical debate has formed an eclectic set of possible perspectives, without finding, in our opinion, a coherent paradigmatic framework which can adequately guide the interpretation and action in urban planning. The hypothesis of this book is that the attempts of founding an autonomous planning theory are inadequate if they do not explore two interconnected fields: architecture and public policies.The book critically reviews a selected set of current practices and theoretical founding works of modern and contemporary urban planning by highlighting the continuous search for the epistemic legitimization of a large variety of experiences. The distinctive contribution of this book is a documented critique to the eclecticism and abstraction of the main international trends in current planning theory. The dialogic relationship with the traditions of architecture and public policy is proposed here in order to critically review planning theory and practice. The outcome is the proposal of a paradigmatic framework that, in the authors’ opinion, can adequately guide reflections and actions. A pragmatic and interpretative heritage and the project-orientated approach are the basis of this new spatial planning paradigm.

Il volume raccoglie un'ampia rassegna di scritti, in maggior parte inediti, in onore di Giuseppe Dato, professore ordinario di Tecnica e Pianificazione Urbanistica e Preside della facoltà di Architettura dell'Università degli Studi di Catania, con sede a Siracusa. Gli autori sono docenti e ricercatori italiani e stranieri, oltre ad alcuni allievi oggi impegnati nella pratica professionale, che hanno intrattenuto con Giuseppe Dato rapporti di collaborazione scientifica, didattica, professionale o di amicizia. I testi proposti abbracciano un'ampia gamma di temi: dalla pianificazione di area vasta agli studi sul paesaggio, dalla progettazione urbana alla storia della città e del territorio, fino alle esperienze didattiche. Da essi emerge un quadro differenziato e molto articolato della ricerca e della prassi urbanistica negli anni recenti. Gli argomenti trattati sono riferiti a diversi Paesi che si affacciano sul bacino del Mediterraneo, sia sulla sponda europea che su quella nordafricana e asiatica, con una incursione nell'America Latina. Attraverso il filo conduttore delle relazioni personali degli autori con un docente e studioso che ha operato per un quarantennio nel Mezzogiorno, i testi proposti contribuiscono alla messa a fuoco delle recenti tendenze che emergono nelle discipline che si occupano della città e del territorio. Assieme alle esperienze didattiche e della diffusione della conoscenza del territorio i temi trattati spaziano dalle diverse declinazioni del concetto di sostenibilità, alla lettura delle principali trasformazioni urbane, alla mobilità nei suoi diversi aspetti, al ruolo dei servizi e delle infrastrutture tecnologiche nei sistemi urbani, alla tutela del paesaggio e del patrimonio culturale, alla partecipazione nella costruzione del piano. I punti di osservazione proposti rivelano alcune delle complessità e delle contraddizioni dei fenomeni territoriali che emergono in un orizzonte territoriale come quello che gravita attorno al bacino del Mediterraneo, dove passato e presente animano uno scenario ricco e vitale. Ha curato questa raccolta di scritti in onore del suo Maestro, FrancescoMartinico, professore associato di Tecnica e Pianificazione Urbanistica, con la collaborazione dei colleghi del Dipartimento di Architettura dell'Università degli Studi di Catania, presso il quale Giuseppe Dato ha svolto gran parte della sua attività scientifica.
