"Ce volume aborde des phénomènes de mobilité spatiale rarement pris en considération dans les débats actuels en sciences sociales où elle est considérée comme un "principe général de la modernité" (BonB et al. 2004) et célébrée comme un nouveau paradigme. À l'exemple de l'espace Sahara-Sahel, les auteurs traitent ici de variantes "banales" de la mobilité et du mouvement dans la mesure où elles représentent des formes élémentaires de recherche de subsistance et de revenu. Ces formes sont le contraire de ce que l'on peut assimiler à des stratégies de "libre choix" ou à des expressions d'une individualité moderne. Une des particularités des contributions présentées ici est d'analyser diverses formes de mobilité spatiale, tant régionales qu'à travers des exemples classiques de migration européenne, non seulement en fonction de leurs effets économiques sur l'individu et la collectivité d'origine mais aussi des implications locales et régionales qu'elles génèrent. L'objectif de cet ouvrage est ainsi d'attirer l'attention sur le fait que ces mouvements présentent un potentiel inhérent de changement et de développement. Les textes ont été rédigés à partir des communications présentées à un atelier de travail interdisciplinaire financé par la Fondation allemande pour la Recherche (DFG), à Bamako en février 2011. Des études empiriques sur l'espace Sahara-Sahel y ont été mises en lumière dans une perspective "vue de loin", qui compare les conditions politiques et administratives des mobilités en Afrique de l'Ouest et en Amérique latine. S'y ajoute une perspective "vue de près" qui suggère une conception de la mobilité inspirée de celle des nomades sahélo-sahariens et non de celle des voyageurs occidentaux modernes."--P. Elisabeth Boesen est anthropologue et travaille à l’Université de Luxembourg. Ses recherches se concentrent sur le Sahel ouest-africain et l’Europe de l’Ouest (en particulier la Grande Région Sar-Lor-Lux) et portent entre autres sur différentes formes de mobilité spatiales.

It looks at young men living in a Soninke-speaking village in Gambia who, although eager to travel abroad for money and experience, settle as farmers, heads of families, businessmen, civic activists, or, alternatively, as unemployed, demoted youth. Les contributions de cet ouvrage traitent de différentes mobilités. Il y a la mobilité historique qui rend compte de la répartition de la population dans l'espace national. C'est ce que l'on apprend sur le Bénin où la distribution historique de la population en détermine le redéploiement actuel, pour cause de développement. II y a la mobilité régionale avec des exemples sur le nord du Cameroun et le sud-ouest de la Côte d'Ivoire. Le Cameroun offre des cas de mobilisations dirigées et spontanées pour une redistribution de la population dans un objectif de développement équilibré. La Côte d'Ivoire présente un exemple de mobilité spontanée qui a débouché sur des conflits fonciers propres à entraver les efforts de développement. Au Mali enfin, nous avons une combinaison de mobilités nationales et internationales qui ont conduit à la restructuration territoriale, aussi bien en ville qu'à la campagne. Dans ce travail, ce n'est pas tant cette mobilité qui préoccupe, mais ses types. sa portée et surtout ses causes. La grande préoccupation dans la majorité des cas est l'adéquation entre la population et les ressources. Les différentes contributions illustrent comment les populations s'évertuent à réaliser cette adéquation et à s'adapter aux changements à travers le temps.
