The current fossil fuel-based system of mobility is associated with a wide range of environmental and social problems. There is a growing body of literature on system innovations and transitions which has as a common understanding that long-term transformative change is necessary to deal with these complex problems. However, knowledge on the crucial role of citizen-consumers in sustainable mobility transitions is still underdeveloped. By incorporating the viewpoint of consumption patterns and everyday life routines, this book provides (new) knowledge on the role of citizen-consumers in sustainable mobility transitions. Theoretically, a practice based approach is developed as a novel framework to analyse, understand and influence transition processes to sustainable mobility at the level of everyday life. The focus in each of the three cases studies is on situated interactions between consumers and producers. Amongst these is an analysis of the role environmental information and subsidies in new car purchasing. Also, various examples in which an attempt was made to orchestrate a (modal) shift in commuting practices are examined. Each of the empirical case studies shows the important role of contextual factors in understanding and influencing mobility behaviour of citizen-consumers. In addition, this book helps to understand how and why innovation in mobility practices takes place or not.

Delivering a sustainable transport system is not just a matter of adopting a number of technological innovations to improve performance in terms of people, planet, and profits. The three authors examine the costs and benefits of an experiment in community change in Mobiltown. The experiment, which brought higher status people to a poor community, is evaluated on the basis of surveys, indepth interviews, and observations. The research shows that the experiment has mainly resulted in the status enhancement of the community as a whole. Yet, expectations for social integration between the new and veteran residents were not fulfilled. Many of the cultural, economic, commercial, and social developments were based on some form of implicit segregation. The dynamics of unbalanced outcomes are demonstrated in the areas of intergroup attitudes, the formation of social networks, and in the political and educational arenas. The Mobiltown experiment demonstrates how the cost of newly introduced social gaps are countered by the benefits of the status enhancement of the entire community. An important study for sociologists, urban planners, and those concerned with social change in Israel.How can depressed communities be upgraded? One approach is to import settlers with higher incomes. In a unique experiment in Israel, this approach was utilized, and the results are the focus of the Ayalon, Ben-Rafael, and Yogev study.

The thesis of this study is that the forms of population migration change systematically over periods of time and from area to area. Using data from several parts of the world, the author shows how population mobility is linked to wider social, economic and political change, and that it is closely related to such processes as the rise of nationalism. He draws comparisons between the historical experience of Europe and patterns in today's developing world. The book is divided into three parts. Part I examines the problem of the measurement of population movements and reviews studies of mobility based mainly on the historical record. This part is concerned with the patterns of mobility in pre-industrial and early industrializing societies as a basis of comparison with more recent patterns. The specific focus is on mobility and the peasantry in order to examine critically the notion that peasants either are or were mobile. Part II contains detailed descriptions of migration in a number of countries, particularly Peru and Papua New Guinea. The author looks back on earlier work and attempts to review earlier conclusions in the light of recent research and data. Part III deals with certain changes that occur in the way they do. The central theme is the penetration of a European-dominated system and the two-way relationships between the factors giving rise to particular patterns of mobility and the effect that these patterns of mobility have on society and the economy. A separate chapter examines the ability of governments or other institutions to guide the changes in particular directions through migration policy.
