This book examines the origins of modern corporate finance systems during the rapid industrialization period leading up to World War I; leading to three sets of conclusions. First, modern financial systems are rooted in the past, are idiosyncratic to specific countries and are highly path-dependent. Therefore, to understand current financial institutions, we must take stock of the forces at play in the near and distant past. Second, financial institutions and markets do not create economic growth without significant first steps in industrial development and supporting institutions. Third, and most important from the modern policy standpoint, there is no 'one-size-fits-all' solution to financial system design and industrial development. Having specific types of financial institutions is far less important than developing a strong, stable and legally protected financial system with a rich diversity of institutions and vibrant markets that can adapt to changing needs.

Excerpt from Mobilizing America's Resources for the War, Vol. 73: Annals, July, 1918 The point of mv first illustration can now be seen. Devotion to ideals can no longer be taught through the ear, from preaching moral sermons. Devotion to common ideals must come from the common experiences of every day life; of those ordinary things which after all are most fundamental. If these common experiences cannot be had, common ideals will not arise. Even in a democracy we must recognize this and secure the substantial freedom of all individuals to develop themselves. To a wonderful degree America has been a melting pot for the immigrant in part America has failed, because it has neglected to see that the immigrants come in contact with American ideals. We forget that the immigrant does not get his conception of justice or of the persons administering justice from contact with the Supreme Court of the United States, but from the policeman on the beat, the magistrate and the police court. Almost without exception the negroes of this country have been most patrio tic and are today as willing to serve the country and die for it as any of us. In reality what have we given them? Have we been con cerned with teaching the negro to know his place or encouraging him to develop to the extent of his ability? The fact remains then that, in the case of the immigrant and the negro American, we must primarily recognize either that they are part of us and must Share our common life or else admit that we have gone on an oligarchic basis and propose to develop the country without regard to them. Masters Of War written by Michael I. Handel and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-12-05 with History categories.

This is the first comprehensive study based on a detailed textual analysis of the classical works on war by Clausewitz, Sun Tzu, Mao Tse-tung, and to a lesser extent, Jomini and Machiavelli. Brushing stereotypes aside, the author takes a fresh look at what these strategic thinkers actually said—not what they are widely believed to have said. He finds that despite their apparent differences in terms of time, place, cultural background, and level of material/technological development, all had much more in common than previously supposed. In fact, the central conclusion of this book is that the logic of waging war and of strategic thinking is as universal and timeless as human nature itself. This third, revised and expanded edition includes five new chapters and some new charts and diagrams.

The Mobilization Of Intellect written by Martha Hanna and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with History categories.

Behind the fa ade of unity, the French intelligentsia was riven by the same fundamental divisions that had characterized it before the war. For example, the Republican Left argued that German nationalism and militarism began after Kant, with Fichte or Hegel, while the Catholic and nationalistic reactionary Right denounced Kant as the evil inspiration of France's liberal democracy and public school system. The heated rhetoric of the war and the unbearable loss of young lives, says Hanna, lent weight to a redefinition of French culture in national terms--and this, ironically, ended in the cultural conservatism of Vichy France. This is the first study of the power of French pens and words during and after the Great War. It is a contribution to French and European history as well as to intellectual history.

Updated with maps, photographs, and battlefield diagrams, this special fiftieth anniversary edition of the classic history of the Korean War is a dramatic and hard-hitting account of the conflict written from the perspective of those who fought it. Partly drawn from official records, operations journals, and histories, it is based largely on the compelling personal narratives of the small-unit commanders and their troops.
